Ok, I rent a house with some mates and have been there for over a year now with no TV.

This is because the house doesn't have a TV ariel.

Spoke to the landlord about fitting one outside my room and he said he doesnt want anything attatched to the outside of the house. He doesn't mind anything inside though.

So I'm planning to put one of those loft ariels in just above my room and run the cable down. Which I can do without drilling holes.

Just wondering what I need to take into account when setting up / picking an ariel.

I'm hoping to use a digital signal.

And I've tried one of those little ones that sits by the TV and it sucks ;)

Depending on how low the signal is in your area you may need to get a super huge ariel, but any of the normal (and huge) 48+ element ones should be good for you. In the loft the signal will be weaker.

Point it the same way as any other new looking ariels in the area.

Name Linked Transmitter Name Distance (km) Bearing Date Aerial Group Before Aerial Group After
Most Likely Transmitter Crystal Palace 33 103 2 012 A H A H

You'll want something like a Blake DMX10A (As the transmitter is Crystal Palace) but it won't work all that well in the loft.
Use this to check the line of sight between you and the transmitter.
If it has to go in the loft, make sure you get some good quality cable as well.

I bought all my bits from here

BTW, don't get a wideband aerial for use with Crystal Palace as you won't get as good a signal as a group A aerial. The Blake DMX10 is also CAI Cat1 approved.

Ok. Sorted. According to that site there is nothing in my los.

I was hoping for this to be a project for this weekend :( Its a lot more complex than I first thought.

A "super huge" aerial or any "48+ element" aerial will not work as well in a loft due to the design requiring a large clear space around the aerial to collect the signal. You'll pick up more signal with a good quality 18 element aerial if it's going to be loft mounted.
