TV - Black screen with audio

For the past few years every summer the screen would flicker every so often but no major issues.

Recently the screen would be working fine, maybe flickering due to the summer heat and then the screen would instantly go black but the sound is always present. I would have to turn off the TV for a few minutes and then turn it on again but within five minutes it would go black again.

I have tried connecting it to my computer as well as my PS3, tried a different HDMI port as well as cleaning/dusting the external parts of the TV and the issue still persists. I also flashed a light onto the black screen to troubleshoot but there does not appear to be anything on the screen

What is the next step?

Thanks for the help

sounds like maybe the backlight is overheating given what you've said. perhaps could be on its way out. you've not said how old the screen is or make/model?

might be time for a nice new screen :)

Sorry for lack of details... its a Toshiba Regza 32" 32XV55DB and is five years old or so

I suspected its to do with overheating; so should i take out the chassis and clean/air dust the components akin to an over heating computer or is it different with televisions? Thanks

if you open it up look at the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply for and signs of bulging, take pictures of the boards so that you can unambiguously spec out potential bay 2nd hand replacements (I have replaced tcon board twice in 10 yr old philips ips for <£10) first time disassembly always the worst discovering the tricks, then took < 1hr.

Hi jpaul please could you be as precise as possible with what i need to do, what to buy etc as i am a total noob when it comes to television repairs. Feel free to PM me if required

see this discussion on tcon boards to determine if that might be what is faulty

Backlighted means the lamps are on and you can see bright lights in the back of the screen through the little holes. If the lamps are on and all you see on the screen is a grayish lighted screen, it is a bad tcon board. Get the part number off your board and start looking on ebay. Get the exact same one. Match the ebay pic with yours. The same model set can have several screens used during production.

also see this which discusses power supplies.

if it is the tcon then need to determine what specific board it is, will be something like this

I took a gamble on a tcon (some vendors sell 2nd hand without really having been able to test them, so i have sent a few back)
Taking the tv apart and installing them is a bit tricky (but fun)

... at the end of the day I payed £5 probably took 3 hours first time and a new tv of same quality would have cost >£300
if it is power supply then purchasing&replacing capacitors is a lot more involved needing intricate soldering, and a new 2nd hand board will probably be £30 if you can find one and a less economic proposition

When i used my flash light on my phone i could not see anything when the screen went blank

When i opened up the case there was one little whole where i could see a bright light when the screen went on and then this flickered then went off as the screen went to black. I confirmed all the plugs etc were inserted and there were no viable hardware damage

So is the unit recoverable? If so which part should i try first the power supply on the left, the Tcon board, which i presume is the one in the middle, or the main board which i presume is the one on the right? Thanks

I would look for a 2nd hand power supply, may have to wait till one pops up on ebay or contact a seller who recently sold one, and try it, if you can get it < £15 or so
some ebay folks accept returns so with care, if it does not work, could return as not needed.
[I do not know what the role of the board on the left, also how audio continues if power supply is failing - maybe it just has inadequate power for display]

Sorry for not replying but had a few things going on. I really don't have the time/money to have to buy, test and probably be stuck with stuff that doesn't fix the issue so i want to be as precise as possible with which part to replace.

I think the main board is fine since all the connectors are working

I agree that it could be the power supply but the audio continuously working is not conducive with this

And since the little hole at the back of the TV where the screen/light comes through also blinks out when the screen goes blank which suggests that i should replace the back light rather the the power supply? And just to confirm that its also called an "inverter board" and would be under the casing just above the power supply? Thanks for the help

I do not know how to discriminate if invertor or power supply is the problem,
but if all of the electrolytic capacitors look ok then maybe it is not psu .
I do not think presence of audio means power supply is not at fault

I saw you can get an invertor at below site £18 and also a psu. $$ £30

I would potentially ring them up for advice

psu

invertor

ThIs link suggests invertor, but does not discuss possible backlight failure itself

£18 sounds a reasonable gamble ?

Cool, thanks very much for the help. I will try out what you suggested...

That is if the television stops working again! As it is, it magically started working, better than before now i never get any flickering image even in the summer heat!

^^ Obviously jinxed myself by bragging about the TV working since it now stopped working so ill give your suggestions a go! Thank you very much for your help
