TV broke, thinking of replacing with a Sony 55XD8599, any alternates I should look at?

Well, my old Sony 1080P set broke, lasted about 2 years, luckily it was still under warranty and I have been offered a full refund but looking for a replacement it seems all a bit up in the air right now.

I have been looking at a Sony Bravia 55XD8599, it seems to get ok reviews although some say the blacks are not great but for the money (£1000) it seems about the best I am going to get.

Any recommendations for something else at 1000 or under? I don't want to go over 1000, I can't justify anymore than that on a TV to be honest.

what happened to your old tv out of interest?

model?

The broken set was a Sony Bravia KDL50W8, pretty much 2 years old to the day.

The screen just went blank while watching the TV, you could see the backlight come on when you turned the TV on but that was it. Engineer came round and straight away said the screen was gone and that Sony do not replace the screens so would be scrapped and was later offered a full refund from the store.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, looks like the Sony is out, I had read it stuttered with 4K but thought they had fixed it with a firmware update, I guess not!

People also complain about stuttering on the Samsung UE55KS7000 so I might go for the cheaper Panasonic TX-50DX750B as it really looks like 4K is not where it should be right now with these sub 1000 pound sets.

How bizarre only 2 years. A fluke or common? I'm still surprised my 46" Samsung CCFL is still working great from March 2008.

According to the guy who took the TV away, the company he works for is picking up around 10 Sony TV's a week, so take that as you will.

wow. it's normally a like for like replacement or a pro rata refund depending how long you had it into the warranty period.

for example say you had a 5 year warranty with the store and it dies after 2 years you usually get 70-80% of what you paid off any tv or an equivalent tv.

dies after 4 years you may only get 50% off any tv if you don't like the like for like replacement

I was happy when they said a full refund which is why I really want to stick with the company I bought the original TV from, trouble is it is just a minefield out there, I'm still not sure what the right choice should be!

Thanks. Bought from John Lewis?

Yes, was John Lewis.

Finally went for the Panasonic TX-50DX750B, so many reviews stated different opinions with all the sets but this TV seemed to be a pretty decent all rounder for the money it is.

A long shot but does anyone know the screw size to wall mount the TV to the bracket? I have read online that its 4 M8 x 45mm screws but surely they can't be that long? The TV depth must only just be around that!
TV arrives next week so wanted to be ready to put it straight up.

My TV order for the Panasonic got messed up, was told it was being delivered today after the order went through on the 4th, phoned up today and told the order had not been processed and now would be the 18th so I've cancelled. I'm not sure how they could tell me just 2 days ago when I called that the order was imminent when it was not even on the system but anyway.

It is to close to the November deals coming out so I'm going to wait. It just seems we are in a horrible transition stage right now between really good 4k sets and compromise sets. Will see what deals are about in a few weeks.
