Two Britons were arrested today for displaying Free Tibet banners near the Olympics stadium in Beijing.

The British Embassy in the Chinese capital said it was investigating and making efforts to get access to the pair, who are members of the group Students for a Free Tibet.

The protest group said four Tibet activists, including two others from the US, were detained in Beijing today after displaying two 140-square-foot banners outside the Bird's Nest Olympic stadium.

The first read: "One World, One Dream: Free Tibet" in English, and the second: "Tibet Will Be Free" in English and "Free Tibet" in Chinese. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...e-Tibet-banners-Beijings-Olympic-Stadium.html
I wonder how often this is going to happen over the next few weeks?

Probably quite a lot although whether we'll hear about it much is a different matter. At the moment I'm just trying to hide my shock that they got arrested for doing something so blatantly likely to enrage the Chinese authorities - no, sorry, I've failed, I'm gobsmacked.

//edit I should say that this is a good cause but I can't say I'm certain that this protest will do anything in changing the policy of China towards Tibet. Nor that of its policy towards Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) either come to that.

the chinese shouldnt have the olympics, their government is a disgrace to the modern world. if they didnt have nukes...

if they didnt have nukes what....?

Invade them? for what? You're right though. We should invade them. And when we're done with the largest/second largest population on the planet we can move on to North Korea. Then once we've invaded North Korea, we can invade Iran. Then, possibly, we'll have to start making up new enemies. We could invade Argentina cause 20 years ago they looked at us funny. Then we could invade Japan cause they're too clever for their own good. then we could invade the Australians for being dirty convicts that have effectively escaped from custody.

...they'd still have the biggest population in the World and be the greatest exporters with a trading balance that dwarfs the next closest countries by a huge margin. Irrespective of the nuclear weapons the Government is highly unlikely to be attacked in any form other than some stern words about their human rights abuses, they are far too important in a trading sense and as the saying goes "money talks".

Surely India should follow China? After all, they are sworn enemies of our allies in Pakistan. ;)

Yes, I use chinese goods, but i would prefer them to have the same rights as us and their products to cost more, but at the same time i am not going to not buy them as me alone will do nothing, it is a job best dealt with by our government . just because i bought this eee pc for £300 doesnt mean i wouldnt pay £600, hell people pay 1k for a macbook air ;)

Do you really expect China to give up on oil, (and this is from 2001, not new) why not ask US to do the same with Iraq, or Russia with Checniya. These are all strategic points and theres no way in hell are you going to get them to do anything. Protests or not this is not about human rights, someone just wants to use it as an excuse to achieve something and lots of people are just too retarded to see through them.

Yes ok human rights are a bit screwd over there, but I am betting who ever is funding the protests couldn't care less about those rights.

no we dont invade them you fool, we nuke em, thats the point of them not having nukes... :D

i dont really want to nuke them, well not the people, just the gov.

wait let me get this straight, you disagree with how an authoritarian government which abuses its own people, treats other people and so you want to kill hundreds of millions of innocent people?

Wow, thats ****ing retarded.

Also good to see you care soo much about their plight as to not do a damn thing about it, GO YOU!

As much as their cause is admirable, those two muppets should have kept their mouths shut, their banners furled up and the olympics firmly apart from politics.
