Two Britons arrested for unfurling 'Free Tibet' banners in Beijing

Human rights are all well and good, but wouldn't that mean allowing them to have more than 1 child? We don't want more Chinese...

I wonder if they actually know anything about the China / Tibet situation or are they just clueless fame seekers like many who don't know what they are fighting for ?

There's nothing much to understand is there? An independent country got invaded in the 1950s and was made part of China, who then imposed the horrors of communism and the cultural revolution, and now ethnic cleansing through immigration. It's not surprising that ordinary Tibetans aren't particularly enthusiastic about Beijing 2008, and that they have considerable worldwide sympathy from those who aren't prepared to bow down to China just because they make stuff cheap.

I wonder how many people here are just ranting because its currently the 'in thing'. Dont remember many people being hippies over the subject pre-olympics in china.

Are you objecting to people complaining that China's human rights record is less than sparkling? There hasn't been such a platform for the complaints until now so if you want to try to make a difference then it makes some sense to do so while media interest is at its highest.

I dont mind people protesting, apart from that fact that 99% of the time its pointless, and i encounter a fair bit of it. What i do object to though is using the olympics as a reason to protest more, its just plain annoying. The more i see of these idiots trying to project their own ideals on others the more i dont care about their cause.

What do you expect? It's not like you're doing it in UK. You get majority of Chinese against this idea, and then they are hoping merely a banner would make a tiny change?

Do many protestors know this ?

I remember Joanna Lumley being on TV proclaiming herself a pro-Tibet campaigner and on being asked questions she quite clearly didn't know very much on what she was standing up for.

I would think so, it's hardly a secret. There have been several news items, and documentaries that have touched on the subject.

I wouldn't agree to that. I think many really just base on their judgements on what they hear from the media, which is sometime biased and does not really cover the entire topic throughout. It's quite easy to agree to something when it seems or sound like the right thing, without having to really look back into the history and judge what's right and wrong yourself.

It's like how the media reports genocide on the Tibetans because majority of the Chinese are "Han", then how come they never mention that there are actually in total of 56 different ethnic races in China? And the Chinese just happen to be picking on the Tibetans specifically.

They are not picking on Tibetans, they want natural resources, they couldn't care less about who lives on that land. At one time or another every country "picked" on an area but sooner or later it is assumed that that area naturally belonged to that country...
