Had a look a friends system running dual xp1800's stripped it down to bare minimum ram hd and cd, cleared cmos, and tried to install xp pro, it goes as far as installing the setup files restarts then locks up on the windows splash screen, or if i restart it will say windows is restarting setup and then the pale blue background fades in and locks up also, tried different ram, a different cd drive and various cables, but still locks up, sometimes the drives just disappear on the post screen and are not detected, could it be faulty ide channel thats causing this.
