Tyres....

£70 is a fantastic price, i doubt you will find them cheaper anywhere else inc fitting. I have Eagle F1s myself and they are great in the wet and the dry. I would want the same tyres on all four wheels though tbh.

For that price I'd go with the GSD3's. If you want something a bit cheaper, check out the Toyo T1-R's although I stil reckon for 70 quid a corner, the F1's are the best bet.

I'll hijack this too.

I need some new rear tyres for my Mondeo. Current size all round is 205/50/R17 and it's currently got Pirelli P6000 Powergys on all 4 corners.

Interestingly it's meant to have 55 profile tyres, but it came with 50s all round and there seems to be a lot more choice in the 50 size, and they're cheaper too, so I'll stick with that.

I need a good comprimise between a decent type and price.

So, any suggestions? I certainly don't want to go over £100 per corner + fitting, and less would be better.

Looking just at brands I recognise...

Yokohama AVS SPORT £80.50 each
Bridgestone Potenza RE 040 £86.60 each (oddly there are also some at £90 which seem to be the same)
Dunlop SP SPORT 9000 £91.90 each
Continental SportContact 2 £93.60
Goodyear EAGLE NCT 5 £94.60 each
Toyo PROXES T1-R £96.40 each
Pirelli P 6000 Powergy £101.00 each

Which are the best out of that lot? Need to hold the road well, but at the same time I need them to last a reasonable amount of time.

Probably will, but still need to know which ones to buy ;)

They need changing fairly soon. Annoyingly they still have as much as 4mm tread across some of the tyre, but down to 2mm at some points as tracking was out and worn subframe bushes also don't help with even wear.

Out of the lot you've listed I'd go with the following in order of preference,

1. Bridgestone Potenza RE 040 £86.60 each
2. Toyo PROXES T1-R £96.40 each
3. Dunlop SP SPORT 9000 £91.90 each

I wouldn't touch the Pirelli P6000's or the Eagle NCT5's. I've had both on my Passat when I had it, and in the dry they're fine but it's a different story in the wet - absolutely terrible.

Thanks Scuzi :)

Been speaking to -Westy- on MSN and he agrees about the potenzas.

Any idea why there are others on there (also RE040) that cost more, but have an identicle description and are rated at the same speed etc. Is that likely to be a mistake by mytyres?

IIRC some may have the tyre protector rim which is basically more rubber along the side to protect your alloys from curbing. This may not be the case though, Mytyres might have forgotten to remove the 'old' price and stuck up the newer cheaper price. Might be worth calling them.

Stay away from the Pirelli P6000 Pwergys is all I am saying. Dear God they are horrible. Awful in the wet and not even very good in the dry either. Really must look at getting some new tyres myself.

Dont touch the RE040's if you want wet grip.

They're shockingly bad in the wet.

Try 010's instead. Much better in the wet, as good as the 040's in the dry, stiff sidewall and usually same sort of price. Bit noisy and will wear quicker but you cant have your cake and eat it.

:)

sorry for butting in on this thread but i need a bit of tyre advice :p

175/65/14 - im willing to spend £50 a corner, can anyone recommend anything decent? just the ditchfinders on it at the moment may be fine for my mum but not for me :o

Agrees what becuase as Merlin says they are not great - the good Potenzas are the RE050A or the even better S-03's.

I've had RE040's and was impressed by them. It obviously depends on the car though, the same tyre will probably perform differently on different cars, especially a barge compared to a sports car.

With respect though, there are people out there who say Wan Li Ditchfinder Special is *** UBER LEET becuase they've never lost grip with them on - individual opinions on tyres are not quite as useful as an individuals opinions on other things becuase we know nothing of the driving style, etc etc.

This is why I prefer proper, scientific tyre testing at dedicated facilities - tyres are properly and directly compared and can be accurately judged in everything bar wear rate.
