Hi All,

New to the forum, my first post.

I am in the market for a new monitor but just cant decide between the Dell U2311H or HP ZR24W.

For the Dell including a AX510 sound bar and delivery its £289.46

For the HP including NQ576AT sound bar and delivery its £355.20

Now I am leaning more towards the Dell as it is a newer product, reviews suggest that it has better blacks than the HP. That said I think the 1920 x 1200 res of the HP would be better. The Dell is supposed to only use about 33watts of power compared to the HP's 85 watts (which of course will equal more heat).

I am going from an 1280x1024 17" Asus monitor which has 8ms response time.

I will be using it for games BFBC2 , photos, web browsing the norm really. Not using it with Photoshop though.

Was considering a 120hz but they all seem to have quite big issues still eg back light bleed

I have a Nvidia GTX 570 graphics card

Any advice would help

Cheers Jason

Hi,

I have found a company that has 100 LP2475w's in stock but in total with a sound bar and delivery it would then be £385 even the £355 for the ZR24W is pushing the budget really.

Cheers Jason

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Dell, definitely considering the price difference and general love of the Dell everywhere I've read about it.

The dell is a nice monitor but it has a 16:9 aspect ratio as opposed to the ZR24w's 16:10 ratio, unless you will be using the monitor for console gaming and/or watching movies on, then I would go with the HP as I personally feel the 16:10 ratio is better for web/office work and PC gaming.

I got my ZR24W for a couple of quid over £300, really pleased with it. The blacks are fine if you calibrate it properly, as out of the box it's only 'okay' rather than great.

i had a dell 2209wa great monitor view angels and colour reproduction are so much better than older monitors

I love the 1920x1200 of my HP (LP2475w).

If I was going to go for a 1920x1080 I would have done the Dell 23, but as I wanted the extra 120 pixels for art and music workspace, I ended up with the Lp2475w as it was just a shade under £100 cheaper than the Dell 24" which has problems with pink and green that Dell will not support.

It is an extra 230,400 pixels just to avoid people thinking to themselves that '120 pixels isn't much'.

I use my U2311H in the office and its fine. I have a 2407WFP at home and I don't miss the extra pixels when at work. I decided to get another Dell as I was pleased with my 2407WFP and haven't regretted it, its a fantastic monitor at a reasonable price.

Just to throw a spanner into the works. An advantage of 16:9 that many people don't seem to appreciate is that you get a wider field of view in most games. Many people seem to think that the image somehow appears 'stretched' horizontally but you actually see more of the in-game world horizontally instead. Of course you see less vertically but this is perhaps less surprising given the differences in vertical pixels.

...you see the same amount of vertical pixels in any hor+ based game engine no matter the resolution, seeing as thats 90% of modern games and is the only type that 1920X1080 shows a wider view than 1920X1200 on must be what you're refering to.

and you can easily set the game to play at 1920X1080 if the slightly lesser field of view really bothers you that much.
1920X1080 has no benefit over 1920X1200 except for less strain on the GPU due ot the fact theres .2 million less pixels.

Ok, but isn't saying that 1920 x 1080 offers no benefit contradictory to your earlier statement that it offers a wider field of view with no change in vertical FOV? Many would agree that this is a benefit. Just like the slight extra detail could be considered a benefit of the higher resolution. In both cases the difference may indeed be slight but it is still something to consider. Undoubtedly the difference the extra vertical real estate makes on the desktop is the most tangible benefit but I do think people are overly critical of the 16:9 aspect ratio.
