Uber to lose licence to operate in London

Unrelated I guess, but it shows the mindset of the media vs Uber when you see the reporting of this terrible accident in Leeds where some youths lost their lives. "HORROR UBER CRASH" headlines from the likes of Sky, The Mirror, Mail etc. despite the accident looking like the Uber driver was an innocent party and just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It seems any story involving an Uber driver, the story that there was even a tenuous connection to Uber makes the headline, rather than the terrible loss of life.

Exactly. I doubt it was the 42 year old uber driver going at excessive speeds on the wrong side of the road. The car rammed full of teenage boys and girls is why young people have to pay so much for insurance.

The post from lifesgood, which has been removed from view, and he’s apparently been permabanned, deserved an answer.
As it appeared in the form of an email, in my inbox, it appeared to have been authored by Hans Christian Andersen, or the brothers Grimm.
He’d recently stayed in London, and had noticed that Black Cab rates, “mysteriously” rose after a certain time in the evening, his comment? “Clearly something dodgy there”.
This of course ignores the fact that there are 3 rates throughout the 24 hour day, all sanctioned by TFL, and calibrated into each taxi’s meter by a TFL authorised agent.
These rates are clearly posted on the inside of the o/s passenger compartment door.
He further pushed the old saw about drivers clearly going the long way round if you’re unfamiliar with the area, this was noticeable by him, though as he was unfamiliar with the area himself, Christ knows how he knew that the driver was taking a longer route than necessary.

nope not at all

they are still allowed to operate under appeal,

although might have something to do with every time they need to apply for a licence TFL get nigh on £3 million out of them .

will be granted on appeal for a reduced 6 month period rinse and repeat

I hope they do as the introduction of uber saw a ridiculous increase in congestion in london. Guessing also leading to an increase in pollution, no where near as much as reducing london road capacity drastically for a few lycra clad morons tho.

altho it doesn't actually effect me anymore as no longer work in london. so i guess it makes no difference personally!

It's annoying as the only alternative for someone like myself who lives in a suburb is a minicab. And I'd far rather a vulnerable loved were in an Uber than in some dodgy minicab.

Also when travelling to different countries, it's always reassuring to know you are being picked up by an Uber rather than someone who is going to rip you off. I actually had a useless 'normal cab' Uber driver in the US once who went a really strange route according to the Uber app, and I was refunded no questions asked. Without the Uber app I'd have had no recourse, even if I'd noticed on Google maps or something - it would have led to a confrontation.

Safety reasons my arse.

It still has to go to magistrate court though so it hasn't stopped yet last time it was won on appeal.

I use Uber a lot ye it expensive in London but I have never had a problem with any driver apart from the odd one abit lost on pickup. No way I would use the traditional black taxi to end up rinsed this is only been introduced to suit them at the end of the day.

I have since been reading Bolt is a cheaper alternative to Uber in London I used Bolt in Budapest and it was decent enough.

Two things:

1) A black cab is not obliged to take someone beyond X miles from London, so there needs to be a provider to fill this gap otherwise people could be left stranded late at night
2) John Worboys

Cynical ploy by Khan to secure a vote for Labour from the cabbies?

As argued in other threads, I'm the biggest fan of Uber and cannot stand the black cab experience in comparison. However two things;

It meant there were at least 14,000 fraudulent trips in London in late 2018 and early 2019, TfL said.
I'd like to know the stats for private hire minicabs and/or black cabs for comparison. I'm betting it's way more.

And to be fair;
The regulator also found dismissed or suspended drivers had been able to create Uber accounts and carry passengers. In one instance, a driver was able to continue working for Uber, despite the fact his private hire licence had been revoked after he was cautioned for distributing indecent images of children.
It sounds like this needs fixing - it's good that they've come out and explained why they've decided to suspend the licence. Although again, Uber are being singled out for something that undoubtably happens way more in minicabs and black cabs. If you get into a black cab you've absolutely no way of knowing his licence is real, or expired, or he's a rapist.

I'm sure it'll be fine. I'll get my flaming pitchfork out if they actually ban Uber permanently.

Why not? Have you not seen what happens on their Pornhub channel?
Some middle aged bloke will start using crude chat up lines on you, just as you realise you have no money to pay and so he'll drive you somewhere secluded to smash your back doors in! :eek:

Whatever floats your boat!

Is this to be taken as a confession that you've actually seen their Pornhub videos?
