UEFA Euro 2012 - Group D - ** spoilers ** (England, France, Sweden, Ukraine)

He's a second choice right-back at a middle table team while league champions in Ferdinand and Richards are sat at home.

Isn't Ferdinand injured? I thought that was the reason he wasn't in the squad in the first place.. But I agree, Micah Richards must be wondering what he has to do to get into the team, he won the Premier League and that squad has been torn apart by injuries yet tons of mid-table defenders have been put in ahead of him..

Don't think he's injured. He wasn't at the end of United's season. I think the 'injury prone' excuse was just what Roy put out there so he could justify taking the racist wife stealer instead.

Richards is a second choice right back at his club and hasn't been favoured by any of England's recent managers. Yep, he's great.

Second choice rb? Loool
He didn't play the last few games because of injury and Zaba just being immense. Has scored 2? And got 7 assists this season. Great return for a RB. Has come on leaps and bounds under Mancini. So what if no England manager hasn't picked him they haven't exactly done anything to prove theredecision not to play him eg get near the final of any competition with the truly useless Johnson who brings nothing to the team.

You could claim he's been unfairly treated or unlucky if one England manager doesn't pick him, but two, three and four? There's something about him the England managers don't like and it's something that isn't apparent to the people that just watch him.

What a shambles, it was stretching credibility to say Ferdinand was left out for footballing reasons in the first place. Now we have all these drop outs and that's still the case??

Yeah agreed, there's clearly something going on behind the scenes with Richards the hasn't come out. I don't think anyone would deny that, purely based on football, he shouldn't be there ahead of Kelly.

That said, Kelly is a top talent. For me, he's already better than Johnson, so as a Liverpool fan I'm chuffed to see him going.

Kelly's a very good defender and is only going to get better however if we're picking players on footballing reasons (as Hodgson said) then Ferdinand should have been called up. All this has done is make it crystal clear that Ferdinand's exclusion is down to Terry being in the squad.

May well be. Based purely on football, Rio or Richards should have been in the original squad.

Although that said, I'd be as disappointed to see Terry and Ferdinand together in defence as I would have been to see Lampard and Gerrard together in midfield. I've championed bringing younger players from the start, as we're not going to win the tournament either way. Blood some youngsters and win the world cup in two years :)

I'm not sure about Richards. He's become the most overrated player since Hargreaves post 2006 WC. Several England managers and Mancini (when it really mattered) all preferred Zabaleta over him. That must tell you something about him.

Jones will most probably become the 4th CB with Kelly providing cover at both RB & CB, and Kelly at RB is very Hodgson.

I think England have a bit of an advantage with the fixtures here, in week 2 we play Sweden 3 hours after Ukraine play France so at least we will know where we stand. Match 3 is played at the same time as France play so as long as we are in a comfortable position, we shouldn't be under too much pressure. I have no idea of the quality of Ukraine but Yarmolenko seems to be their star player, watch out for him.

Apparently Richards refused to go on standby, so just as Carrick missed out, Richards will also. If true you have to laugh at both of them, they would be very good candidates for the starting XI now due to injuries yet because they didn't want to be just a squad player now neither of them are going to the Euro's..

Ohh okay then, on performances and ability Rio walks into the team even with Cahill available so this clearly isn't a decision made about football.. I'm surprised Hodgson picked Terry over Ferdinand, Rio has probably played better this year(considering how many different players he has played with in defence this year) plus not having Terry there would probably be a big boost to morale as there wouldn't be the court case looming over the team.

EDIT: Seems I was beaten about the Richards refusing to go on stand by..

It's not a surprise at all. Hodgson prefers the Terry style of CB's over the Ferdinand style. When he was at Liverpool he preferred (and picked) Carragher over Agger and on the one occasion Agger did play, Hodgson was caught screaming "just ****ing launch it" to Agger when he tried to bring the ball out of the back.
