UK government boycotts Euro 2012 over Ukraine treatment of Tymoshenko

It's only really meaningful if teams and referees refuse to go.

I hope this happens - unlikely I know.

Thing is Joe Public cares about the zillionaire footballers scoring more than these kinds of things so I dont know if these political boycotts will make an impact.

But thousands of Joe Public refusing to go and near-empty stadiums..that will wake em up.

The whole point of weapons development is to make them more accurate so as to NOT kill kids. This is what I do for a living.

Well they are still selling weapons to rogue states which are used to kill innocents regardless of if they are accurate or not.
It's really not good to sell weapons to those who take away freedom is it?

probably party donators.....

what an outrage! this poor woman is in jail...

pitty the goverment doesnt take a stand on whats happening in syria like they did libya.........

How about no, the current situation is much more volatile than with Libya, the entire region could destabilise.

Apparently multiple nations inside the ME area are funding the war, any actual move on our part will require far more intervention than is needed or planned for.

Wow for once im impressed. Well done. They had NO case against her.

I'm marginally less impressed after reading a bit further to discover that attendance at any further matches will be "kept under review" should England progress beyond the group stages. It seems we'll make a political point but only for the games we're not that fussed about - once it gets important then we'll ignore the principle?

If you've not seen it - I'd strongly recommend watching this documentary on iplayer:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01jk4vr/Panorama_Euro_2012_Stadiums_of_Hate/

includes footage of a whole stand of Ukrainian football fans doing Nazi salutes... the interview with the Ukrainian football official is pretty horrendous... he suggests that they weren't performing a nazi salute but were merely all pointing at once....
seems about as credible as the Iraqi information minister's 'There are no US tanks in Baghdad' claim.

Regardless of the treatment of the former PM, which is also shocking, I'd avoid the place based on how the fans behave alone.... I know the UK isn't perfect either but I don't believe we've ever been as bad as they currently are. Certainly do not go near the place if you've got dark skin, the beating of Indian students in front of stewards is unbelievable.

If I was the Ukraine... I'd boycott the teams of the countries who are doing this & not allow them in to play their matches.

How childish - as if simply "not showing up" is going to benefit human rights...

saves us spending money to send politicians to watch foot ball though doesn't it?
