UK government proposes to block all Internet porn as standard

Like anything, watching porn should be done in moderation. I have a high sex drive but I still think that watching porn should be done the minority of the time otherwise it clouds your view of the 'real' world. You should not really think "I want to date girl X in porn" or "I want to date girl Y in porn" because you are purely thinking about the sex, and entering into a relationship with that someone [unless you are the kind who can just opt for a **** buddy] is a different kettle of fish. There are plenty of good-looking people out there that are total idiots who you'd never dream of dating if you got to know them.

However, I also think it's important to watch porn - or at least indulge in erotica - a minimum of the time to keep your sex drive healthy. And because it's fun.

It's no different to anything else in life - most things are fine in moderation and it all boils down to the individual and their mental state.

Baran (1976) showed that exposure to pornography led to reduced satisfaction with their own sexuality.

A study by Malamuth and Check (1981) backed up by one by Weisz and Earls(1995) showed that exposure to pornography where women as victims of sexual aggression aroused the women where then shown to have an effect of increasing the acceptance of the use of aggression against women in sexual and nonsexual interactions.

Edit: Sorry missed the bibliography

Baran S J (1976) How TV and Film portrayals affect sexual satisfaction in college students Journalism Quaterly 53
Malamuth N, Check. J (1981) The effects of mass media exposure on acceptance of violence against women. Journal of Research in Personality 15
Weiz, MG, Earls CM (1995) The effects of exposure to filmed sexual violence on attitudes towards rape. Journal of Interpersonal Violence 10

Without reading them I can't quite comment but I'm thinking that three studies (which are pretty old) aren't really enough to change my viewpoint.

Also, when answering questions (for studies etc) the mind doesn't always state what the reality of the situation would be. It's easy to say "I would do X in Y situation" but it's a bit different in reality. I'm sure porn (along with TV/films/magazines) does have an effect on people but this 'block' isn't the answer.

If you can bring some evidence that refutes those studies I am perfectly willing to change my mind. I'm not overly previous about it. There are probably more but a I said in the following post in that thread it was outside my area of study and I only looked it up for work avoidance.

The reports themselves make interesting reading and sound relatively plausible. I just feel that if you want to argue in favour of something then you probably should be aware of the potential risks so you can make an informed decision.
