Although I'm glad to see Ukraine hit it, I have no wish to see 500+ russian sailors die. So I hope they got off.

Uncle from Only Fools and Horses: "Did I ever tell you about that time I was working on a Russian ship in the Black Sea..."

This was discussed in this thread yesterday evening. Somebody reported they abandoned ship despite there being a storm in the Black Sea at the time. Surely they had some fire/explosion deaths, but the question will be whether the life rafts were picked up.

E: According to Russian MoD it didn't sink, the fires are out and is being towed back to port

I watched the video you posted, didn't you?

It was the snarky comment "Having failed to conquer Ukraine, Putin turns his sights to an easier, cheaper target: the Moon" I was posting, not the video. But, no, I didn't watch the video I didn't realise it was subtitled so I didn't see much point :)

They do have the ability, they have ballistic missiles, they could launch them at the main government buildings in the centre.

And they think that's where the command and control apparatus is located right now?

If Russia knew where that stuff was, I think they would have already hit it if they were able.

If they have not been actively trying to seek out and destroy their enemy's command and control center(s) this entire time, they are woefully inept.

This threat sounds like standard "YOU'RE LUCKY HE'S HOLDING ME BACK!" bluster.

That's vague and not particularly relevant, it's where Zelensky has been making broadcasts from etc.. it would be a big symbolic hit, they're not trying to take Kyiv right now so it would be mostly something done out of spite.

Not really. They've got ballistic missiles, if they want to hit government buildings in Kyiv they likely can.

Guess we will get confirmation before long if it's sunk or not.

who's that
US P8-A is a large maratime patrol aircraft. it will likely be doing a sweep of the area to try and get intelligence on the state of the striken ship. A ship of that size nature would be easily seen by it, so should be easy to tell if sunk or not. doubtfull it will be able get close enough to tell what damage is done, but at least the can tell if its floating or not.

That wont be the only reason its there, will just be doing the usual patrol route, gathering intelligence on russian naval movements. Not sure if the P8-A is sigint capable or not? But may be in the area doing that sort of thing as well.

FORTE10 is up in that area as well.

This was the threat that was posted:

"If such cases continue, the Russian armed forces will strike decision-making centres, including in Kyiv," it added.

If they have not been trying to do that from day one, they are totally inept.

Or, considering the way they have bombed civilian targets thus far, if this is a threat to be less-descriminating with their targets, that would ring even more hollow if that's what they are going for.

I believe they are claiming that the evacuation occurred when the ship caught fire before the ammunition exploded. I mean, I assume even Russia trains and equips the crew of their ships to evacuate in the case of such a fire (*cough* missile attack *cough*) so it doesn't seem particularly implausible that they got off to me. If, on the other hand, the Ukrainian strike triggered an immediate explosion then, of course, they'd be doomed.

I wonder if they attempted some fire control before making that decision, given Russian incompetence in this war I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't

Why didn't they fire another missile once the ship was in trouble?

Just to finish it off like?

Not sure about this situation, but when I was with an artillery unit, I remember the most important thing to do after attacking was to GTFO. When you shoot, expect return fire soon.

Edit...typed too slow. As stated above.
