I see it as a net positive for the EU, as horrid as it is on the ground for Ukrainians. I hope the EU fully replaces the reliance on Russian oil and gas with renewables and modern nuclear

Guessing a lot of it would be offset because there not going be the normal daily millions of cars & lorries driving around, lot of jets & planes, heavy plant & factories running, home oil boilers & coal fires etc etc

Well besides largely cosmetic and structural changes (mostly economic) the colonial mindset remains the same, though I will say the Soviets at least respected their military instead of treating them as though they are garbage like this ex-KGB criminal cabal does.

OK, I'm sticking my neck out and declaring peak Russian desperation. A reply I made on Twitter has 126 likes & 13 retweets so far (I'm deffo small fry) but 10* separate replies, all from Russian support accounts. I've attracted one or two before, which is always gratifying... they're wasting time on me instead of bothering someone else. But nothing like this!

It's almost as interesting as those reports of Russians fighting among themselves. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but there seem to be more cracks in the Russian offensive now than even the average guided missile cruiser. Which could be worrying, because of the whole desperate times/desperate measures thing, but... one day at a time!

The U.S. government has no objections to Slovakia transferring its fleet of Soviet-era MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets to Ukraine, a senior American defense official said today. This comes after a previous plan to give Poland's MiG-29s to the Ukrainian Air Force collapsed after authorities in the United States said they would not directly facilitate the delivery of the fighters via an American base in Germany.

The Slovakian government says that it would need certain security guarantees before any such transfer could occur. Questions still remain about how quickly the Ukrainian Air Force could get additional MiG-29s, or any other combat jets it might receive, into the fight.

Another one bites the dust - 7th Russian General is confirmed killed

Russia has lost another military general in the war on Ukraine, in the latest blow for Vladimir Putin.

Vladimir Frolov, deputy commander of Russia’s 8th army, was given a military funeral in St Petersburg’s Serafimovskoe Cemetary on Saturday.


Alexander Beglov, governor of St Petersburg, confirmed the death in a statement saying Frolov fought in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

Perhaps, but the USSR was hardly much better and I lament that Russia couldn't find a path towards prosperity in it's collapse. Tbf Zhukov wasn't as controversial as Stalin for sure, but I think for it's mostly been done out of a desire for revenge against this invasion (it will assuredly enrage Russians) and I can hardly blame for wanting to do it.

I think it's notable in that usually Generals in most armies and most wars tend not to being killed at a rate of one a week.

From what I understand Russia has a lot more Generals in, well general, than most armed forces in relation to the number of troops, but even so they are losing senior officers at a rate that I don't think has been seen in any other army in decades.

On the positive side of things for the Russians, it saves them having to have a lot of their generals die in "accidents" shortly after the end of hostilities (Russia has this odd thing where successful or popular generals have a tendency to die in accidents shortly after a war).

Russians (the general public) are banned from twitter so can't access it.

The Russian Tweets are from Russian government sources, their goal is to praise Russia and downplay everything else. Bottom line you can't trust any tweets from Russians.
