Something about Germans tanks going to eastern europe still gives me the shivers, irrational I know
I am sure some locals would very much feel the same
So Scholz is going to make a statement at 5pm (6pm CEST), hopefully it's good news on further assistance from Germany. Would be nice to see their rather large stockpile of Leopard 1's get shipped off assuming they aren't as rotten as Russia's 'reserve'.
I'm not sure Leopards are really a good idea for Ukraine, they seem like not great tanks (?) and they'd need to train new crews and support and build up their logistics to support the different tank types. If they're going to all that trouble wouldn't it be better to get a more modern tank in? A certain amount of every bit helps, of course.
I like Scholz, I voted for his party and I'm glad he became chancellor, but this kind of situation is very much not playing to his strengths and public opinion about him is not glowing, I think pressure from within the coalition and without is going to push them into further action in support of Ukraine. Take this bit of polling (the question translates as "is Scholz a strong Chancellor?")
He still has a good image within his party, but little outside: unusual for Germany at least in recent times, and perhaps undermines his heir-to-Merkel unity candidate schtick. Mind you, Merkel's entire approach to Russia has been found wanting so...

yeah, I see the US sending 18 howitzers which no doubt will be useful but it won’t really affect the outcome. x10 that number and you’re making a big difference. Not sure why the half measure. But then I don’t know much about these things. Could be one of those howitzers is worth 10 Russian equivalent with range and accuracy?
For the tanks I guess they could put these leopards to use defending places like Kyiv or western cities that currently have homegrown tanks stationed there. Move them closer to the front and allow the new crews time to learn their machines.
