With Putin though theres a difference. It's not simply a land grab. It's a police state. He can't have democracies on his doorstep as it will influence his own population. That does bring you back to conflicts of ideology.

Unlike a more general embargo, this probably isn't true of Finland. Although Finland is highly dependent on Russian gas, it's a relatively small importer of gas from Russia's point of view so it doesn't hurt them much to cut off Finland, hell, the likely resulting rise in wholesale gas prices might end up cancelling out any loss.

They are prepared:
"Hamina Energy is opening a new LNG terminal in Hamina this autumn, as Finland increasingly uses liquefied natural gas to replace Russian supplies."

I see Oleg Tinkov has finally had his say....in his usual brash style he was actually quite unflinching in his expletive laden assessment of the war in Ukraine. He was always an outspoken character from his cycling team days and he clearly hasn't changed. He seems to have lost an absolute fortune recently, partly due to the sanctions.

On a minor chord, Wimbledon has banned Russian and Belarusian players from competing this year.
