MOSCOW (AP) — The White House on Tuesday began referring to Russian troop deployments in eastern Ukraine as an “invasion” after initially hesitating to use the term — a red line that President Joe Biden has said would result in the U.S. levying severe sanctions against Moscow.

Several European leaders said earlier in the day that Russian troops have moved into rebel-held areas in eastern Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recognized their independence — but some indicated it was not yet the long-feared, full-fledged invasion.

Later, the White House signaled a shift in its own position.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, principal deputy national security adviser. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

The White House decided to begin referring to Russia’s actions as an “invasion” because of the situation on the ground, according to a U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

Finally some sense in all this, as Enkore would say "calling a kettle a kettle"

Sanctions on 5 Russian banks. Can anyone explain what this actually translates to? Damb squib?
Not entirely a damp squib. Firstly it stops any person or company outside of Russia transferring money to or from other banks. But secondly it means a lot of difficulty for those banks to raise cash. It's the lack of liquidity that causes banks to crash. Not saying it will cause it here. But the Russian banks will have to seek funding elsewhere, presumably from friendly states or their own government.

EDIT: Just seen that not all Russian banks are on the list. Well in that case it is a damp squib as the money can still be channelled through the unsanctioned banks.

I think what annoys me the most about Putin's speech is the absolutely absurd notion/implication that any major European country/the USA pose any sort of military threat or risk to Russia (ie that they would ever attack/invade Russia if not attacked first).

The sheer notion of it is obviously ridiculous, but Putin is somehow trying to make up in his head that the threat of that remains.

DONETSK, February 22. /TASS/. The Kiev forces deployed five Buk-M1 anti-aircraft missile systems on its controlled territory in Donbass, Deputy Head of the People’s Militia of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Eduard Basurin said on Tuesday.

"On February 20, five Buk-M1 surface-to-air missile systems from the 223rd anti-aircraft missile regiment capable of striking aircraft at an altitude of up to 22 kilometers within a range of over 30 kilometers were observed to arrive and go on combat alert in the areas of the communities of Mangush, Novoaleksandrovka, Toretsk, Kramatorsk and Kamyshnoye of the Stanitsa Luganskaya district. However, the DPR people’s militia has no aircraft flying at these altitudes," he said.

I hope this isn't pretext for them to bring another civilian aircraft and claim it was Ukraine like last time

Maybe like Yugoslavia wasn’t threatened by NATO?
Until we took sides.
