Funny how times change.

* 1949: 'Communism can never work, Russia and China will fall!'
* 1990: 'See? The USSR is breaking up and she's turning to capitalism! China is next.'
* 2000: 'Hmm, China is still going strong and now she makes all our stuff. How did that happen?'
* 2022: 'Oh ****, China is an economic superpower and she's already bought half of Africa!!'

Somehow, China defied the odds.

You forgot China between 1950 and 1980s: look how we eat cockroaches for dinner, We stand in line for for 5 days waiting for rice and they give us cockroach

The country WAS dying and failing to feed itself under communism (China was one of the poorest countries on this planet for several decades), it wasn't until they introduced capitalist market reforms and trade that they started making money to buy food.

If you don't believe me, next time you meet someone from China who's aged around 60 or 70 or 80 now, go ask them what food they ate when they were 20 or 30 or 40 years old living in China

So wait
All of China and its vast regions could only produce cockroaches. And rice after a 5 day queue. . . . . .

I know several Chinese people.

Well not really it completely shed any semblance of communism and just became capitalist then it was successful

The crops failed after they killed the birds that ate the pests thinking they were eating the seeds.

Tens if millions died according to quick Google 18%+ of the population in some regions in just 2 years

Similar to Russia many people resorted to gleaning to survive (crawling though the field after the mobile has been through and scraping up the lost/missed grains)

And they survived then on cockroaches alone the only insect to survive in this stricken land mass? As well as the rice crops that did not fail but you had to queue 5 days for?

A bit of a leap.

Oh, I agree that China had to make a lot of changes.

She had to industrialise, she had to beg, borrow, buy, and steal western technology, she had to find countries weaker than herself to exploit, and she had to implement some aspects of capitalism. Without these, she could not have survived.

But she's still a communist dictatorship with a socialist market economy.

No ihave no idea what the cocroaches thing is I'm assuming its a bit of hyperbole like wevels in the grain here in the old days. Just the 10s of millions dead

I think the richer less rural people survived mostly on imported food as they weren't so dependent on local agriculture.

China does farm roaches though these days but I think its for magic medicine than food

That was a good video.

So basically, if we just continue to impose sanctions and supply aid and weapons, Putin simply cannot win. Will Putin ever accept that though?

there’s definitely an overwhelming feeling now though that he’s pushing hard for a way out. For Zelensky to talk so positively of the talks, then Putin must be making some decent concessions.

Just to hold ground? It’s getting pretty desperate for Russia, no wonder they are coming round to the idea of peace. I hope Ukraine gets its territory back and we continue to arm them.
Lets say that Russia turns around and goes home. What do you think will happen to all the weapons we sent to Ukraine?
