Anyone know what the rough value is of a warship like this ?

Hard to say. The nearest modern equivalent in the Chinese navy costs the best part of $900m but the Slava class is 40 years old and that ship hasn't been refitted for 20 years.

The bigger problem for Russia is that Turkey is blocking them from bringing a replacement in, and it was a key air defence asset.

It might not have been refitted for 20 years, but it certainly had had more weapons systems fitted in those 20 years. That could well have been it's downfall. Too many weapons systems, not enough tech knowhow on board and no overall oversite of those systems and coordination of them.

So why didn't Ukraine try and subsequently sink it - if they were zerod in on it's location - humanitarian ? waste of armaments ?
would have been great from a moral perspective.

I don't think the UK is supplying them with harpoon missiles, that was just some twitter rumour that got repeated. The UK does seem to have supplied them with Martlet missiles and also IIRC there were reports of sea spear missiles.

AFAIK they might well have only had a few of these Neptunes as you say, they were due for delivery around now but obvs there might have been difficulties. Using (some of) the few they had available on the most valuable target like this makes plenty of sense given they now seem to have some shorter range stuff to take on landing craft etc.. courtesy of the UK.

Yeah, sounds like the harpoons are just rumours at this stage with a few unreliable sites (DM, sun) claiming it's already happened.

What do you mean? Sunk is sunk and the Ukrainians immediately claimed it was their missiles that caused it.

You don't need to sink it to make it useless in a war and that was probably the goal to help Odessa

and ultimately they did sink it

Do they seriously think any one with more than two brain cells believes any of the rubbish they keep spewing?

This sinking could be the catalyst for Putin, who knows what he may do now

Well as their line is that it sank during a storm following a tragic accident how are they going to spin that into justification for escalating violence? Not like they have much left in their repertoire other than going nuclear anyway.

It’s not sunk, it’s performing a special underwater operation

They are a joke, reminds me of Reagan making constant jokes at Russian empire expense in the 80's ;its always been this nonsense narrative that even their own people know is way off the mark but they lack the rights to ever argue against it. Obviously the country has no live or free opposition or free press etc.
