Do you remember pvping on 56k then some 1337 Swedish guy on a 10ms pinging connection would burst onto the scene and just murder everyone at once.... You couldn't even keep up with them on a horse.

He had early cable and was incredibly annoying with his LPB status. In fact, I believe quite a few of the old 6I6 were LPB's.
As for the death of UO, it's actual death began the first expansion after AoS.
AoS was the last thing that was produced before EA relocated their Texas HQ to California. AoS itself actually boosted subscribers and gave UO life for another year or so even if it was in a item dependent state, the PvP was actually still rather fun.
Once the move happened and new people took over at the design helm the game went downhill rapidly.
