1080p and QuadHD / 4K can take a step back, the Japanese government has announced plans to bring Super Hi-Vision (a.k.a. Ultra High Definition) to life as a broadcast standard by 2015. With its 33 megapixel (7,680 x 4,320) resolution and 22.2 channel surround sound, challenges so far have included building a camera that can record it, and equipment to transfer the 24Gbps uncompressed stream.

Wow

Utterly pointless

Agreed. On the size of screens people will have in their living rooms, it'll be beyond the ability of human vision to discern pixels that small. You'd have to sit very close to a very large screen to even tell the difference between that and half or even quarter of the resolution.

the res is one thing. but 22.2 channel sounds. where the hell are you going to put that many speakers?!!?

even little BOSE things would be tricky!

Got to love those Japanese, I read a while ago Japan has had HD for 10+ years…Sony have a hard drive recorder there capably of recording 12 channels at once and one in HD (probably more by now). I suppose it is pointless (22.1 sound channels!) but it must push technology along and make the ‘normally’ cutting edge (1080p etc.) more affordable for the rest of the world so good luck to em!

Its only pointless with the size of TV's we have now but imagine a 150" screen on your wall at that resolution :)....id buy one

22.2 channel surround? Hahahahahahahahaaaaaaa......

That is the most pointless thing I've heard of... It would be a PITA to set up properly, and stereo LFE won't sound any different to mono LFE as bass is non directional!

Still, I guess it will sell a few new systems, as higher is always better isn't it...

Also, mixing and mastering a film for 22.2 would be no mean feat...

I would imagine regards bass it'd be more front and rear bass where it COULD make a difference. Mono directional, but you'd still feel the rough direction the noise came from.

And you're right, it would be hard to master decently, but if done properly...wow that could be nice... imagine full music concerts in 22.2

i doubt my ears could even distinguish 22.2 channel surround sound.. and that would mess up your living room, considering how small houses are over there.... i can barely distinguish stero from mono :p .. have the japanese got nothing else to do.. (we could master the world... nah... china's got that covered, we'l just hitch along when the time's right and claim we're chinese, britian and america are stupid enough not to realise..... "hey wheres japan thesedays?......." "what the hell is a japan?"

for a tv that big you'd need to move house just to have a wall big enough to have the TV in front of as i'm assuming no modern day house with plaster board walls will hold it up. then you've got to be sat far enough away to see the whole thing.

sounds totally crazy to me. we had to re-arrange and living room only a few months back just to get a 40" 1080p samsung my dad bought into the window bay.

Perhaps the japaneese have invented ocular implants to replace our eyes... We are borg, resistance is futile.
