Hi

Applying for uni soon and at the moment Manchester Met looks like the best option for me, seems fgreat. Just wondering if anyone on these forums go to it and can tell me everythign they can about it, like social scene, teaching quality etc... If it helps im lookign at the Business Systems course with placement year at the Aytoun Campass.

thanks

Ive got a friend whos just started her first yr there I shall get hold of her once freshers is over n see what she thinks

Alright, mixed bag some good lecturers, some couldnt be arsed i found in my final year.

Lots of new equipment and facilities which is good.

People blah on about it being a poly and having a bad rep etc, didnt stop me getting a graduate job before i had even been to graduation and i didnt get the best degree classification.

Graduated in BSC hons Environmental Management this year.

Graduated this year from MMU and I can highly recommend it! The social scene is immense - plently of societies, bars, clubs and facilities. Because Manc University (inc UMIST) is just up the road there is a huge student population on the oxford road campuses, students from both uni's can share facilities etc. If your looking at business courses you will be at the Business School at a-town which is one of the best in the country. a lot of my friends at uni attended the Business School and they speak very highly of it. A-town is just up the road from the main campuses on oxford road near to piccadilly station but is easy walking distance from anywhere within the city centre.

Seriously if you go to Manchester you will not be dissapointed, it has everything London, Birmingham, Edinburgh etc has!

Graduated with 1st Class BSc(Hons) Multimedia Computing degree :)

I think you will like it. Loads going on in Manchester, much more interesting than Hull. The course and location are more important than the uni itself i reckon so if your course has a good rep and the place is good then go for it.

"I'd rather be in Iraq than the Met!"

One of the varsity rugby match chants when I was there :D

KaHn - BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering - Manchester/UMIST

I graduated from there 4 years ago, and this year, so I liked it.
Manchester is full of studenty pubs, clubs of all types and if you lean that way there's always Canal Street ;)
There's always plenty of students about whenever I go out, although there are also lots of underage girls as well, so you need to be careful.

I can't compare it to anywhere else but the lecturers I've had were always fun, interesting and helpful, even if some of the lectures might have been a bit dull.

The city is really good...

Also their union is 99p a pint after 8pm and the food is cheap

Didn't go to Uni here but live in the city centre. Love it, even moved 25miles further away from work to be here :D

The nightlife is poor compared to other northern cities and the people are a bit up themselves. The food is good if you like asian/chinese but poor if you don't. There are some decent living areas but there are some truly awful ones too. A mile out of the city in any direction to a further 3-4 miles is just wasteland (or should be).

Don't listen to gilly bout the nightlife, he hates manchester for some reason, I found the night life very very good, but it is not in one area you could find your self in one part of town for a few drinks and going to another part the next.

Manchester is 2nd on my list of cities after Newcastle.

Ah the Micky Mouse Polytechnic ;)....can't really comment too much on the course as I went to UMIST. The town is bloody great for students, lots of places to go out, lots of friendly people, all the universities have good student unions.

My better half is a librarian at MMU. She isn't that keen on the Aytoun Campass. Not meaning to sound rasist, but her issue is with the asian Business students who, according to her, have a real attidude problem.

One of her colleagues was teaching them yesterday in Info-coms, and they kept giving her grieve for being a librarian and at a second rate uni. Her response was 'If you're so ******* clever why aren't you at Oxbridge?'

(btw, librarians have to have a postgrad diploma as a minium, and most have a second masters degree, so they aren't happy taking poo from a bunch of snot nosed undergraduates).

No swearing

Gilly

Sounds like a general positive vibe then, ive already been on the open day, and going again on *** next open day as there was simply loads going on. Atm it is top of my list. So thanks a lot :)

And tbh the nightlife I think I will love., as I like the nightl.ife in Hull, and manchester must be better.

Manchester nightlife is amazing. You can't go wrong on that front (4 uni's in one area will see to that).

As for the met - it blows monkey chunks if you half a brain. You get a lot of sub par students who rely on mummy and daddy to support their B.A in Mickey Mouse's anus. Most of them should be flipping burgers at McDonalds. The reality is unfortunately even worse - they end up unemployed spongers, bitter at the fact their B.A in Fecal Extraction (2:2 - 3rd) has not instantly landed them the position of CEO of Microsoft.

I'll stand by these comments for as long as people ask about this god awful university.

(I went there, had the best times of my life by a long way, but tried to avoid MMU folk as much as possible)

My old house mate was exactly like this, his mum and dad paid his way through uni and he did about 15 hours paid work (and none voluntary!) in his 3 years there.....sickening when I used to work 30hrs a week trying to fit uni in!

edit - I knew Id forget what I was going to say because of my rant.....

Manchester as a city rocks!! I go to Salford uni, but have lived in Manchester all my life so know it pretty well already...got loads of mates who attend/used to attend Man Met and they all seem to love it! None admittedly were on a business type course however...my best advice is visit the uni, spend a day in the city (a night if you can!) and see first hand :)

i live in manchester and go to man met!

night life is fab, living accomodation is great but obviously you need to look around, my mates all seem to have found themselves really nice flats and houses! teaching is fine, the only reason i dont like it is when some lecturers are foreign and have strong accents, makes it difficult to understand something you dont understand anyway! uni's great tho, great facilities etc

the social scene could not be better, manchester has the met, manchester university, and salford uni within a very short distance of each other.

there were almost 90,000 students in 2005 according to this bbc news article, wouldn't be suprised if it's passed 100K by now.

and one thing manchester is definately geared up for is taking cash off students in return for entertainment.

go, enjoy, indulge, and if you've any energy left, try to get a degree

ps. i got degrees from UMIST as was and Owens (the university of manchester), so by rights i'm obliged to look down on MMU monkeys :)

I hated it to be honest. The night life around Manchester is great, but the Uni itself I found to be a complete farce.
