Hi all

I've done this before but a quick overview.

Currently studying Maths, Futher Maths, Geography, Physics at sixth form and my targetted grades are A*, A, A*, A. I am confident in all but physics that I can avchieve these, and reckon that if I piled on the effort I could just about scrape physics there.

I have also already completed a Computing A2 with an A grade

I have applied to Uni to study a masters of maths course. Despite my grades, I have not applied to Oxbridge as despite the constant dispeling of rumours, upon my visit there I just didn't really like the atmosphere and was not a huge fan of either place.

As such, I have applied to Durham, Bath, Southampton, Leicester, and Bristol.

Out of those that I have visited (Durham, Leicester, Bristol), I like Leicester the most, Bristol slightly behind, and Durham last, despite the fact that is opposite to the supposed "rank" of the unis for the subject.

I'm still awaiting acceptances, rejections, the like, from all 5 of my choices, so this is all pending and could change... but I'm completely unsure as to where to go.

Due to a bad day with one exam in maths (including personal reasons, don't want to go into it) my overal UMS last year was quite a low A, yet this year it's all going very well and I'm well on track to hit the requirements for an A*. Due to durham requirng my UMS for my taken exams, I feel it likely that they will reject me, leaving me with 4 possibilities.

I am completely unsure as to whether I will get offers from all of them, but I feel fairly confident that I will recieve them from Leicester and Southampton at the very least.

These are the two lowest "ranked" unis on my application, yet I very much liked Leicester, the place, the uni, the accomedation, the people, etc. I have not yet visited southampton.

Until recently I was fairly content with waiting and seeing where I wanted to go depending on offers, yet I've recieved information from southampton, that means if I were to get an offer, and I got all of my target grades (or even less, just 4As), all of my tuition fees would be paid for me on a scholarship basis. That's £14k~ off my student loan.

So, basically, what do I do? Considering none of the unis are Oxbridge, will going to Southampton, over, say, bristol/bath/durham have a big effect when I come to get a job or the like? And is it a nice uni, particularly any maths/sciency students there?

Cheers all.

I can't say much for maths at Bristol (except it seems challenging), but the uni here is awesome. In the city there is so much to do compared to other locations, bear that in mind. There really is something for everyone here and being in the thick of it (the city) is great fun.

The locals are very friendly on the most part too.

Currently doing Maths in Manchester. Its a good uni great city but there are better out there, Have u considered UEA one of the best in the country and norwich is a very chilled out city, Also York is very nice and highly reputable.
With predicted grades like that go to the best uni you can it would be very unlikely u were refused a place anywhere

With all due respect, UEA is much lower down in all the league rankings for Mathematics compared to all of my choices, and I have absolutely no desirre to stay at home! Want out of Norfolk!

I've already applied to=my chosen 5, so I'd rather not go throught he hassle of changing everything :)

Southampton if they are paying you. You would be unlikely to pull the money back by going to a higher acknowledged uni.

However, Nottingham would have been my choice to go to for Maths but too late now.

Dude, go to Southampton. Its got plenty rep and is a great Uni city, that kind of saving cannot be sniffed at. You can't underestimate the frustration of having a lump of your pay cheque coming out on top of everything else for your blasted loan.

Plus, Soton is rammed with fitties doing medicine.

What the **** when did Alevels get *''s?

This is the first year they are awarding them. You need an A in the first year then 90%+ in your second year to achieve one. Certain subjects are different, ie, with maths only A2 Core modules need to be above 90%

So basically Alevels are as good as GCSE's now I.e. worthless:o

Well I'm studying maths at Durham, and personally like it the best out of your choices. But I understand that you don't really fancy it - although may I ask why?

Southampton is quite good for maths, however I have one friend taking maths there with similar high grades to you, who does not feel stretched on the course and doesn't really enjoy it anymore. Perhaps he's just lazy - who knows!

i do think in terms of reputation, its not quiiiiiiite up there, but i don't think it will be detrimental to you at all because people still respect it, and tbh with that massive £14k I think you'd be silly to overlook it!

I wouldn't say that, achieving 90%+ in your second year UMS wise is a fair challenge.

And how can you hate stats! It's lovely and simple, exam last week was nigh on thereputic, just plugging away for 45 mins and then redoing the paper on the calculator to check I have got as much as possible right!

Dangerstat, it is quite good for maths, it's top 15/10 depending on where you look...

Okay, *pats Hxc on the head like I would a slightly retarded friend *

Rather than being condecending why don't you suggest why you think it's not "good for maths", then? I'm genuinely interested. It was my outside choice to begin with, just the prospect of 14k off my student loans for going to a slightly worse uni is a tempting one.
