Are uni's allowed to deduct marks from your essays, if you dont turn up to some lessons. I know that they can disqualify you but taking marks off ? Surely its wrong to do so. Anyone know how it works ?

As has been suggested I'd definitely be checking in the course handbook as I believe some do have a certain attendence figure that must be achieved or you need a decent excuse for not doing so.

I had a mate who had marks docked for not attending his tutorials. But that was referenced in the course notes. Chances are that the marker is right to dock you if they have done so, it sucks but if it is stipulated in the course notes then it's your bad.

I don't think they can unless its in the course book or module details. I've had one module last year where we got 10% of the total mark for turning up to lectures. I've got a related module this semester where we get 10% of our marks for turning up.

So unless it is explicitly mentioned I think this is a dodgy practice.

The university can asses you however they want. But it might be against the university's rules. You'll have to check all the regulations for your uni/department. It doesn't seem very fair for them to do that without telling you beforehand, but that doesn't mean its against the rules.

To be honest they shouldnt be taking marks off for bad attendance.

The worst thing about this would be it producing a false correlation between bad marks and bad attendance.

Then again if your assignments are very specific and don't really cover the full width of the module then i guess that makes a lot more sense.

I think there would be huge problems if they applied something like this to my course as for a lot of lectures only around 1/2 to 2/3 of the class turn up.

You're complaining about being punished because you arn't going to your uni lectures? I don't understand :o
