Hey, my friend lives in halls at university and they have blocked Steam which seems abit mad to me but whatever.

Would a vpn bypass the block or? and ideas welcome.

Thanks for your time

No but I hardly had time to play games, I was either in lectures, in work, doing assignments or travelling to do one of the 3

this is first year we are talking about, your at uni halls to live away from home yes so your closer to the work place but not to devote every hour of your waking life to work.

a vpn should work, but i'd check your uni policy to make sure they don't boot you off the network OR out of uni for violating their policy.

as to the guy who doesn't have fun whilst at uni, LOL

I had fun whilst at Uni, but it wasnt whilst on my PC. I had fun at house parties and at the pub (which I worked at) free alcohol rules!

My Uni uses ResNet and it's absolute a piece of crap. It filters pretty much all game servers ports (TF2 works though).
Been trying to look for a decent open VPN, one that doesn't give me 300+ ping on League of Legends. I've looked at Hotspot Shield and OpenVPN but it assigns me to Asia and US IP's, giving me terrible ping and lag.
HideMyAss looks the best but costs (and more than some) but I guess you get what you pay for.
I read somewhere you can get in trouble for using an VPN in Uni but that hasn't stopped my 100+GB download this past 8 weeks lol.

And since when were you not allowed to play games but you're allowed to party? What a world we live in...:o

100gig. pah lightweight, i get through that a week at home :)

This makes me glad I was on unlimited and unrestricted broadband in halls, only 2mb but it was enough. Now I'm in a house and taking advantage of the 16mb whilst everyone's asleep! Quality.

Just buy your own. You can rent a VPS for around £8 a month these days. A Linux box with Squid on makes a great VPN. I was using it from Dubai for unfiltered internet, SSL privacy in WIFI hotspots and BBC's Iplayer from abroad (Server was based in manchester). Win!
