Im going there in september, but havent actually had much of a chance to look around, so i got a few q's.

1. whats it like there?

2. good night life?

3. decent shops?

and anymore when i can think of them

I've stayed in Halifax Collage with an event i took part in, seemed really nice. Can't help you with the uni though. York itself is lovely lots of good shops and not overly expensive, bus from the uni to the centre runs about every 10 mins and.

Great uni, about to get a lot bigger too with the new Heslington East development. Doesn't have a students union building but each college has a bar although they recently limited the days each one opens. Lots of clubs to sign up for in freshers week, everything from paintball to karate.

Its easy to walk into the city from the campus or you can use space age no. 4 bus. As for nightlife there are only a couple of clubs, neither of which are very good. The main one is the Gallery which is ok. There are millions of pubs though so you're bound to find one you like. Closer to uni there is the Charles where most undergrads go, and the Deramore which is more of an old mans pubs but has much better food. York has all the main highstreet shops. For food there is costcutter on campus which is pretty awful, but there is a new Safeway just off Hull road near the uni or Sainsburys at Fosse Island near the city centre, both of which are walking distance. I'd recommend getting a bike though.

Yorks a nice city, I live there ;)

the clubs are dire , however like been said a million bars , some rubbish most of them very good. Loads of clothes shops, city centre very nice.

A bike or a car is no doubt a good idea. Just out of interest where about you thinking of staying on campus or rent a house ??

Yeah, I'm at York, agree with the said above. There's also a bus from the campus to Monks Cross which has a big Asda and another Sainsburys and out of town shops like a Purple Shirts and a Next.

You got your college assigned yet? :)

I live in york too \o/. It's a nice enough city, quite compact centre, all the usual shops. Can't speak for the uni as I didn't go there. Nightlife is all right, There are quite a few cool bars and Gallery is allrightish on student nights. If you want a good night out Leeds is within easy reach on the train and there are trains back all night.

Im gonna be studying medicine, and so ill be starting a week earlier than everyone else. I've still got to mull over the details of colleges that arrived with the welcome letter, so i dont know where im staying atm, but itll be on campus.

if i live in 'alcuin' does that make me part of the college?

Yes, but Alcuin is across the road from every other college (except Halifax) and is a world of it's own. Although it is the best accommodation.

Ziggy's on Wednesdays is always a laugh.

1. Is going to leeds for a night out a viable option / do people actually do it?

2. Does york (uni) have like martial arts i.e. tae kwondo, judo clubs? Im sure it will have but just making sure.

I was at York Uni from 1997 - 2000 studying History! It's a superb little Uni and you'll have some great memories from there once you're done. I was in Alcuin to start with (back when the mushroom still stood in the Chem dep and C block and D block were residential) and then part of Halifax Court (as it was) before it became a colledge in it's own right.

Yes, it used to cost £3 return

yes, it has both and more. They do regular training in the sports halls each week.

I'm at York now, Alquin is the best accomodation so you are quite lucky there. The clubs are ok if you go on the right night which is pretty obvious when everyone else at the uni who is going out that night goes there.

Leeds it about a tenner on the train and last train back is 3.15 I think, always a good night out there.

1) Yes

2) Yes, I used to do Jui-Jitsu - there are 2 clubs (Uni and City) ( http://www.yorkjitsu.org/ ), know someone who did kickboxing too, there are probably others, havn't really investigated.

I live in York, and go to Leeds fairly often.

Yorks a good night out itself though, no clubs worthy of the name but lots of very nice pubs / bars. Most of them are not the typical chain places like most towns are filled with, although there are a couple of the pitcher n piano, ha ha etc etc type places.
