Ello ello..

odd question really seeing as i've just finished uni, but, what exactly is the (hons) part of a degree classification.

Even more bizarrely, none of my commorades know either. Were all fools. We guess its a good thing to have them, but thats about it.

Do you automatically get them if you pass?

Cheers

Raymond Lin BA(hons) PG Dip

A mouthful, and i have never used it.
You'd actually put PG Dip after your name? Seems a little OTT, but perhaps that's the kind of jam you're into.

And for the record, my girlfriend got an honours degree, and never submitted any form of dissertation.

No i don't, but i could. I don't even put BA (hons) after my name. All architects put PG Dip after their name thou, its a normal thing to do, so i could if i wanted to.

Ah, I see. But then again, I could put GCSE, GCE, Bronze, Silver, Gold swimming Awards, STEP and SAT after my name - but I don't either. :p

Hons = 120 credits per year I thought, and you can't graduate without a dissertation from our uni as the dissertation is worth 4 modules

In Scotland, incidentally, Hons you get only if you do the 4yr BSc course.

well, PG dip is done after the degree, GCSE is before. :p

Almost all degree courses are honours courses. Many won't normally give you a degree without honours. If you have a 3rd or upwards you have an honours degree. A pass without honours is for all intents and purposes the grade below a 3rd, but as I said many universities will just fail you if you get less than a 3rd.

This is how it works for England, don't know about Scotland or elsewhere.

Yes - but the actual achievement doesn't really sit naturally next to (or indeed beyond) a degree. Don't get me wrong, it's all well and good. Hey - you put whatever you want after your name; whatever floats your boat.
