Is it possible? Does anyone know anything about the procedures or success rate?

Only really want my third year refunded, first and second were fine, but this year is utter crap as changes were made to the course over the summer which have made it useless and irrelevant.

I will at least complain to department heads, to see if the course can be reverted for future years, but should I feel like I have a leg to stand on I may go through with asking for a refund.

Sorry about it being a rant, don't really want to go on, just need some opinions on the idea.

Your third year's only just begun (presumably), are you sure it's changed that much? If it has then it's worth a try but I think it'll be a tough fight. I can't imagine any school refunding a student without an exceptional reason, e.g. they were seriously ill and ended up missing most of the academic year.

Good luck to you.

Any chance you can't just stick it out? What's so bad that changed in a year?

I've never heard of anyone getting one, and I imagine it's all already been budgeted for, we're well into the third year now.

I think they will not be likely to want to admit that their course/teaching was a heap of..

True.
Especially with current financial situation around the country. I was bitterly disappointed when my final year project will be a bloody group project instead of an individual :( I'll soldier on and see how it goes at the end of the tunnel, if these changes turned bad for me, I'll then persuade the department to revert. Will be 'too late' for me but I'll think of something.

This.

If your department is anything like mine, prepare to get fobbed off and hear lame excuses constantly and be told nothing can be done. Those who could do something already have enough work and see students as a nuisance and admitting there was a problem would be creating even more work for themselves. That's how it goes in my department anyway :\

All of your complaints are sounding very familiar. I don't want to risk getting burnt over £3000, but feel like the system is complete rubbish. The university has seen at least four senior staff step down in the last year or so, just in my field. And it all seems to be due to unnecessary bureaucracy and a few bullies who have somehow managed to worm their way to the top.

I s'pose it's just a lesson in life :s

You'll be lucky, i had a dispuit with bmth uni many years back because one lecturer wasa drunk, the other never turned up and the replacement was unqualified and fresh out of college!!!

I employed a solicitor and they still denied anythign was wrong despite everyone on the course complaining - we never saw a penny.

I can get a refund from my university in the first year provided I quit before December, but I doubt a refund would be possible when you've already gotten into the third year.

you might be able to get a part refund if you drop out - not sure about a full one but maybe since you're presumably only a few weeks into the year.

tbh.. it would be a really dumb thing to do - what do you have lined up if you do drop out of your 3rd year? You've already invested 2 years of your time into this course and not completing it will likely cost you more in the long run than a small refund now.

I intend to finish the year so that I'm qualified to go to a better university.
However, the university it seems is wanting to act like a business rather than an educational establishment, and hence I can't see why I can't reason that the course has been sold in a misleading manor, and what I've received as a 'product' wasn't what I have purchased.

No idea, but there was a news story the other week saying refunds and dissatisfaction is rising massively a unis, so it must be possible.

that makes no sense - if you intend to carry on attending lectures, sitting exams how on earth can you justify a refund

its like walking out of a cinema after 5 mins of the film - asking for a refund and then saying - well I might as well go back and watch the rest of it anyway in case it gets better.

No I don't think you'll get a refund if you intend to carry on doing the course - if you discontinue then you'll probably get at least some if not all your tuition back but if you intend to carry on then I really don't see how you could justify it simply because you don't like the course - uni courses do change over time - especially IT related ones - there isn't much you can do about that. The university isn't obliged to carry on teaching the same modules indefinitely.

I'm not too fussed about the money, but feel like I and my colleagues have been ripped off, the module leader feels the same and has actually quit as from this Christmas. Getting a refund seems like the best way of drawing attention to the problem, as the university only worries about money.
