Woops, sorry you're quite correct - I was thinking of redsn0w.You're thinking of redsn0w, which does have this ability (and the risks that come with it as you stated). I wouldn't recommend users of in-warranty iPhones use this option.
Greenpois0n is a jailbreak tool - not an unlock, so it has no reason going anywhere near the baseband.
