Upcoming Firefox 57 ("Quantum") is twice as fast as Firefox 52

I would probbaly install it if using Quantum, nonetheless I think there is a hysteria now attributed to spectre, inconsistent with the risk it poses versus other more conventional/traditional attack strategies, they all require additional code to be loaded at which point the consequence of a ransomware or spectre breach seem equally bad ?
[seems to be little point making this remark in the cpu thread which has degenerated to a discussion on loading spectre&co patches for systems α .. Ω]
pursuade me that this problem merits this degree of attention. [dual factor authorisation will still protect most critical stuff]

Definitely worth updating to assuming no other problems as this will help to close off one of the biggest possible vulnerabilities to those for most people.

Looks like I had to jump on. Just a shame SmoothWheel no longer works.

Tried using FF again yesterday and on my system it still doesn't open everytime without me having to kill the task. Can't think of anything I've got installed that would cause a conflict.

it's not changed

Since Firefox Quantum has launched, I just wanted to know. Is it only in the desktop versions or will there be an Android/iOS upgrade as well? Or is Quantum already in the mobile version or simply not compatible with mobile at the present time?
Chosen solution
Firefox for Android has some of the basic improvements that are part of desktop Firefox 57. It does not have Stylo or multiprocess. Those features will be coming in future releases.
Firefox for iOS uses Apple's Safari/WebKit engine. It will not be possible for Firefox to bring Quantum features to iOS.

Was still having the problem with FF not opening everytime, I suspect it was my m.2 starting to fail, fitted new m.2 this morning and FF so far has opened everytime I've tested it.

I don't understand the statement that it uses less memory than Chrome, if I open Chrome with 1 tab is uses approx 250-300mb of ram, I just tried the same with Firefox and it uses nigh on 750mb of ram......

EDIT** Memory usage leveled out **

Also, no overlay scrollbars? crazy.

Definitely noticing the second speed boost, especially in terms of graphics. However I'm experiencing issues uploading images to eBay. :(

so memories OK now ? we did this earlier in thread ... were you including all of the Chrome+FF processes.?
Not sure what an overlay scrollbar is - but I uses an FF addon - behind the overlay - it removes stupid pinterest/google/other overlays

Firefox uses quite a lot of memory at the best of times :s it is one downside to it but even on my 2GB tablet so far its generally not a problem - though periodically on my tablets FF seems to launch some kind of housekeeping tasks or something which slow it to a crawl for awhile - leave it long enough and it goes back to normal speed with reduced memory footprint - usually I just restart it at that point.

I've been having nvidia display crashes with firefox for a while now and it happened moments after trying v58 yesterday :( Turning hardware acceleration off prevents them occuring but then browsing and scrolling feels very jerky.

i also had to turn off acceleration - i was getting very weird graphic glitches, the sort you get if you overclock to high.

Ive also got the hardware acceleration off now, as with it on, i was getting dark Green screens of death randomly while browsing, requiring a hard restart, seemed to be on sites with loads of pics/gifs, had no probs since.
