Hello all,
Long story short, my PC is getting a bit long in the tooth and can only play Kingdom Come on Medium and Far Cry 5 on High.

I currently have a Sandybridge 2600k, a GTX 980 and 16 GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM. 1080p is good enough for me, so I'll keep my monitor and drives.

Could I just slap a GTX 1060 in or would I need to upgrade my CPU as well?

I could afford to spend maybe £2000 but I'd rather not if I can help it.

Thanks guys.

980 is slightly faster than a 1060. So pointless sidegrade.

If you want better performance, you'll be looking at a full upgrade.

You should see if the blockage is gfx or CPU, if its gfx then 1080 + if its cpu , then complete upgrade.
Check whether your Cpu is being maxed out but looking at kingdom come you have better specs than needed.
if you want better graphics detail you need to upgrade your card.
Not sure an overclock of the cpu will give you much 5-10%? but overclock your gfx card may be better ...

It’s base clock is 3.4ghz and generally overclocks to around 4.5ghz which is a 33% improvement. If CPU limited this will make a noticeable difference and it is 4c / 8t which helps.

Thanks guys, I'm looking at the Skylake CPU's and they don't seem like much of an upgrade from what I have now. For £200-300 plus the cost of a new motherboard is it worth it?

Coffeelake or nothing . Intel's big push is to get 1st/2nd gen owners onto onto coffeelake

I7 K second for your chipset hand and gtx 1070 if you want to beef out everything at 1080p

Thanks, I think I'll go for that. Can I use any of the LGA 1151 motherboards with the Coffeelake?

Nope, and that's why vendors chuck in a lot of R&D with Intel as it makes them money doing new boards for every 2 gens of CPUs .

Only upgrade if your 100% sure CPU is the limiting factor . Newer games will take more use of more threads such as BF1 and seems FC5 likes core count over thread count .

Normally the most gains you'll always see is from GPU but prob worth waiting for next gen around Q3

See how ryzen+ launch goes and if it affects any pricing
