Upgrade! ATI or nvidia, DX 11 tessellation???

Funny I don't recall anyone with the GTX 280 saying they ran at over 90c at load..

running Furmark yes like all cards, but if you ever owned one, you no the 280 did not.
if running in game at 90c and above (or even high 80's) this is airflow issues ect, people would sooner blame hardware other than there Build for Obvious reasons.

Sounds to me like your rig is rather unstable somewhere trentlad OMGWTFBBQ!¬1onetwothreefourfive ;)

Serious question. What can make my system unstable?

I've installed the correct chip set for my motherboard, my ram is correctly installed and withing in full dual capacity, my HDD's are healthy and actually brand new.

What else can make my system unstable?

One word... DRIVERS.

ATI sucks when it comes to them, where as NVidia rule when it comes to them. I have one NVidia card and one ATI, the ATI card crashes on a regular basis and the NVidia card never crashes.

However, even though the ATI card crashes (by crash I mean the game freezes and I get a lovely Windows 7 message stating that my display driver had stopped... never had a crash in XP mind) it's not so frequent that I would pay the extra cost of an NVidia card.

So if depends on whats important to you.

Don't believe me about the card.... check out this thread... funny how only ATI cards are the ones crashing the browser, freezing computers or giving the blue screen of death.

*cough*

Erm... so... I updated my drivers and it works fine now.

*walks away with his head hanging down in shame*

Ah PEBKAC demonstrated in all its beauty. At least you've admitted to it though.

It's so easy to gather evidence to suggest ATi drivers suck, just as easy as it is to do so with nVidia drivers.

Yep, I can admit when I'm wrong. However, it still doesn't stop what I've personally experienced between the two.

Fingers crossed this will stop the in-game crashes too. Doom 3 was crashing almost everyday.

Tessellation is currently about as useful as Physx imho - i.e a waste of energy / gpu cycles.

Until a game makes use of it in a way that actively affects the gameplay - say an advanced version of the terrain deformation seen in the last Sega Rally - it'll remain nothing more than the gpu equivalent to lipgloss.

^^ BS.

Physx isnt useful because it is limited only to Nvidia cards.

Tessellation will become just as useful as AA and AF once more games begin using it.

PhysX just leave on - it doesn't hurt performance in games that don't support it and its useful in those that do, theres atleast 2 more big titles using it coming out soon, and no doubt nVidia is pushing hard for it to be used more so its not entirely useless.

Tessellation is per game so leave that, usually you'd want to configure the game to use the "normal" setting.

32x AA and the advanced transparency options are nice but you will want to leave them on auto and configure them per application if you want it in that game - some applications will perform very badly if these are forced on.

That may be software tessellation using something similiar to R.O.A.M.

How so when Firaxis have already confirmed that Civ V will use DX11 and tessellation on the word maps and diplomacy screens?

The game is actually written for DX11 you know, it can just be switched off for DX9 / 10 cards.

All this BS about tessellation being as useless as Physx is just lolworthy.

Games are going to start using tessellation, and it is going to become as well implemented as AA and AF are for improving image quality. Just wait and see, Civ V will be one of the first, and I will be playing that for many many years:

"The Civilization V team is really excited about the high-end DirectX 11 performance at a mainstream price point that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 delivers. The 460's support for DX11 features such as tessellation and compute shaders allow Civilization V to run faster while looking better than ever."

I never said it was useless. I put " is currently about as useful ", not " will never be useful ".

It's a gpus' answer to catmull clark subdivision surfaces, which 3d modelling apps have benefitted from for years. Devs will no doubt use it in the same way - model in low'ish poly to save disk space & let tessellation smooth the model out.

And lipgloss generally makes whoever uses it look a bit prettier, just like tessellation :)

Nope I had at least three video driver crashes today, the update made absolutely no difference to the in-game crashes.

I also talked to a friend who purchased a new i7 rig a few weeks ago with an ATI 5850. He moved from Nvidia to ATI and told me his single most annoying issue is the ridiculous amount his card crashes.

Rob-Rx7 in OcUK also moced from NVidia to ATI and he keeps getting in-game crashes too, but never had that with NVidia.

From all the people I know there is definitely a major issue with ATI especially when five people I know very well in real life have ati issues, which is even more magnified when they have moved from nvidia to ati.

Unstable overclocks and heat.

I'm not overclocking a single thing, they are all at stock speeds. Heat is also not an issue, if I was on my PC id link you to my case photos (extremely tidy cable routing and lots of open space with excellent air flow inside the Antec P182).

What else can make an unstable system?

Anyone???
