I am looking to upgrade my current system for 4K gaming.
I currently have this spec...
i7 4790k & Phanteks PH-TC14PE air cooler.
Asus MAXIMUS VII RANGER.
RTX 2080ti
16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS 1600mhz Memory.
3 SSD’s totalling 2.4 TB
2 TB western digital HDD
Corsair crystal 460x case with RGB fans.
Corsair 850W PSU.

I was thinking of upgrading the CPU to a i7 8700 along with a new mobo to suit.
Also 16GB/32GB of Ram at 3000mhz.

Will I see a nice performance increase in 4K with these upgrades, should I invest or just upgrade the Ram to 3000mhz in my current system?

only most recent games like Division 2 would you see a slight increase or the need for it

if you want to eek out every last bit of FPS, then 9900k 8 core 16 threads makes more sense over 6 core 12 threads. able to run to 5ghz as well and slightly cooler . best z390 board as well

CODE
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £986.07 (includes shipping: £11.10)

onl you can really make that call with spending the cash ... could drop down in price for Gigabyte Gaming X board for £150 and £109 3000hz ram , saves about £200 odd

looked the Nitro 4K 27" Freeysnc screen thats 144hz and g-sync compatible ?

Thanks, I really just want to make the most of my 2080ti so whatever is best to boost FPS.
I forget to mention I have a a Acer 4k GSync monitor @60hz.

Would upgrading the ram offer any improvement from the 1600mhz I have now, I think if I was reading right the ram may be the slowest point right now.

They would give small increase to mind frame rate. High speed ram does help non K chips more due to not being able to overclock and then naturally ryzen .

What have you currently got your CPU clocked to ?

My CPU is currently clocked @ 4.6GHz, I maybe able to get more out of it but it’s stable there.

on average 6-7 fps increase. this is both at STOCK

i7 4790k at 4.2ghz vs i7 9700k at 4.6ghz - need to clock 5ghz - and depends on the games your playing - fortnite was actually something to see 20 fps at 4k - but your monitor is locked at 60hz

this one listed all speeds wrong for intel's 4.*ghz not 3.*ghz !!! .... and hold this one with a pinch of salt, but most of the games featured are newer and like extra cores

I’ve reclocked my CPU and now it’s at 4.8, still stressing it right now but it’s been going for 2.5 hours now and seems ok, I e had to raise the core voltage to 1.386v for stability.

get some 4k bench marks up and running . save your bios settings and run stock vs overclocked. see how much you've gained then weigh it up against 8 core 5ghz

sounds like you might be fine though - that are some good water cooling!

I’m now thinking I may be better off changing my monitor to something with a higher refresh rate, only thing is I’m not sure to go for a real high end 1080 monitor or a 1440p 144hz or stick with 4K.

Nitro 4k 144hz is G-sync enabled and £800 odd.

1440p 165hz are killer ! I'm currently using 1440p 144hz Aorus Freesync monitor which works nicely with nvidia cards (Aorus 2080). MSI screens also the same

I will be looking to keep the cost to around £600 so a high refresh 4K is out of the question for now.
I like to play my games on ultra settings, currently playing BF5, Metro exodus and Dirt 2.
What sort of frames do you achieve on 1440p with your 2080? It’s probably more beneficial for me to go 1440p and get better FPS.

Personally, I think having a high refresh rate display contribute far more to the actual enjoyment of gaming in general than higher resolution would.

On my 75" TV (with Freesync support), I could either game with 4K at 60Hz or 1080p at 120Hz. Going between the two, let just say I am fine with reducing the resolution from 4K down to 1080p and can notice the imagine being not as sharp; however going from 120Hz down 60Hz, it feel absolutely horrible like something's seriously off and totally wrong, like how one would feel after driving at a constant 80mph, and then being drop back down to driving at a 40mph zone.

Honestly for monitor size only up to 27" or 32" I don't think the resolution increase from 1440p to 4K would be that beneficial in terms of the actual difference you could see with your eyes. I think you should just invest of a 1440p 144Hz monitor that has good reviews.

I’m going to go 1440p. There’s no point in 4k 144hz, my 2080 ti just wouldn’t be anywhere near enough, I’d need to cards to get anywhere close to 100+hz.

It's the thing that 4k 144hz monitor that is both Freesync and G-sync.. monitors will last 8-10 years... Easily. 1080ti knocked on the door of 60hz 4k gaming and 2080ti easily achieved 60+ min...

So next two gens will push higher and higher from both parties .
Reason why 240hz 1080p being made as eSports have now swapped to 2080ti and hitting above 144/65hz on comps

I’m either going to go for the ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q or the Acer Predator XB271HU.
Both seem to be highly rated and both are IPS with G-Sync.

gents hope you don't mind if I ask a related question in this thread rather than start a new one - for someone that's only lived life at 1080p @60Hz and is looking to upgrade to a new system, would you prefer to go for 1440p @ 144Hz, or 4K @ 60 Hz? I'm sure in the future 4K 144Hz monitors like the Acer will be cheaper, and graphics cards will be capable of outputting 144fps at that resolution with max settings, but it seems a ways off yet. PC used for a mixture of general desktop/internet browsing, and gaming (SP + MP games, some FPS).
