So I've just got a stonkingly good deal on a acer predator x34 off the members market that was too good to pass up.

I know my 970 isn't really going to cut it at 1440 and 34 inches at anything other than medium settings so am definitely going to need to upgrade.

But what?

I'm currently running a 3930k, Asus x79 sabertooth motherboard and 16gb of Samsung green ram.

As far as I understand it, at 1440 I'm not going to get the same bottleneck I would with a new Gpu that I would at 1080p? So could I get away with putting a 1080ti or equivalent 11 series gpu in my current system or will I still need to fully replace the rest of my system?

1080 if you want to scrimp a bit. gsync should make up for the loss in gpu power.
1080ti if you want to go top end ofc.

depending on clocks...iirc your chip is clocked at 4.5ghz no?
of course if you compare it to an 8700k, fps will be lower.
sandy-e hex core @ 4.5ghz probably comparable-ish to a ryzen 2600x @ 4.0ghz (to pick a number off my head)
not too bad for a 6 year old chip

gtx 1070ti and overclock. gtx 1080 11gbps is worth is but they are rarer then *insert pun* and 10gbps version, the 70ti can catch up with

cheapest with 3 year warranty and cooler that isn't going to sound loud or run hot

£100 saving

As orbitalwalsh said, the 1070ti is nearly as fast as the 1080. £100 saving you could stick an AIO on it and it will be faster than any aftermarket stock 1080 and most overclocked cards on air.
