Upgrade from 5870...what card?

The 7950 @ 329.99 is not expensive?

It can be had for closer to £300 if you look around.

Still not cheap though IMHO,although probably closer to what the OP paid for their HD5870 1GB a few years ago.

IMHO,maybe the OP should wait a bit longer. The GTX670TI should be out in the next few months and hopefully this will mean both cards will be under £300 by summer.

I personally think that if the OP wants to spend £400 on a graphics card they are better off waiting for the GTX780 or HD8970 at the end of the year or early next year.

Thanks, I think ill wait then and see how things play out. Id sooner spend less. I wouldnt mind another 5870 for the time being, but thats still £200.

TBH the games I want to play arent going to come out just yet anyway/ New metro, max payne etc.

Well the 5870 was like the second best single gpu card when you got it.

At the moment the 7970 holds that position..... so I imagine you'd have fairly similar experiences with one of them, as you did with the 5870.

The 680 will be a little better.... the 7950 slightly worse.

Sure you could say the 680 is overkill, but with it you'll be able to max everything out, tweak ini settings to make games look better than max settings, and force a crapload of AA and AF on everything at driver level.

If money isn't an issue get a 680 unless you prefer ATI in which case a 7970. If you want more value for your money get a 7950.

Got it, struggles with Metro on full whack. Very high texture settings isnt possible, struggles with DX11 a little.

Destroys Crysis 2. Going to install the HD texture packs i think.

The new card, the 680 struggles with Metro? What are your system specs? I can only imagine that you have a bottleneck in your system. From benchmarks i saw 680 plays Mtero2033 very well - above 60fps on full settings at 1080.

Turn off DOF/Tessellation in Metro then you should get a constant 60fps except for large gun fights where it may dip to 40-50 but it had very high fps when i tried a few days ago with those disabled on very high settings.

There is no chance that Microsoft will spring a surprise DX12 on us when Windows 8 launches or soon after?

This is the problem with technology. It can get out of date super quick.

In terms of performance the 680 will retain this for at least 2-3 years, but in terms of supporting the latest standards, well it could get out dated tomorrow if Microsoft decided it so.

Not a lot of DX11 has been getting used in games. It's one thing having it out, it's another when a lot of game devs only use minimal features of it.

Lol!!!

My 5870 should fetch a few quid to ease the pain.

Unfortunately you'll get peanuts for your 5870 (at least I did anyway), which is an awful shame considering how awesome the card was when it first came out - a truly premium quality card.

I think the 680 is the best choice for your needs. Yes it costs too much, but at least you'll get a solid 100% increase in actual peformance.

People recommending the 6950 simply because it's good value for money have totally lost the plot. It will offer little or no performance improvement over the 5870, making it a completely pointless upgrade, regardless of price.

680 will last you a couple of years, in which case 1080p single monitor is overkill, but if you are like me you dont want to be bogged down in the middle of a 64 player tdm on noshar canals... you can allways get another monitor in the future, maybe on of these IPS whatsanames i keep hearing good things about. as you can allways invest and upgrade your psu in the future. But yes the 7950/70 or a 680, or even a 580 3gb would be okay i should imagine.

Ahh just enjoy the 680 matey, i just upgraded from a gtx 580 and i am very happy. Excelllent performance, 60 watt reduction in juice and a fan that i cant hear over my cpu cooler. More than happy and probably have another 150mhz to squeeze when i need to overclock.
