I mainly use my PC for flight sims. FSX is of course totally CPU limited once you have a half decent GPU.

So the best current processor my Abit AW9D-MAX mobo will take (with existing Scythe cooler) is something like the Q6700.

Is it a worthwhile upgrade assuming I can probably clock the Q6700 to the same sorts of speeds that my E6600 currently takes in it's stride? I am assuming that more cache and double the cores will help with FSX?

Otherwise it seems like I am looking at a complete upgrade with the mobo, ram and cpu to get up to an I7 or similar.

The extra 2 cores will definitely give you a boost in FSX, the Q6700 also has a higher multi than the E6600 so hopefully you'd be able to get more speed out of it than your current chip.
