I have decent air flow in my case but it suffers from being in an enclosed computer cabinet. I have it OC to 3.0ghz, is their a worth while upgrade that will run cooler and allow me to overclock a bit more.

Looked at the q8400 but not sure if it's any better.

Put your Q6600 up for sale and try a Q9550, runs cooler and faster and you keep the overall cost down by utilising your present mobo.:)

Tbh, i wouldnt bother upgrading to a newer quad, i ran a q6600 for a while (3.8ghz) sold it and switched to a q9550 (also 3.8ghz) bit of a crazy upgrade, i basically wanted to try out a 45nm quad, it ran a bit cooler but there was no performance difference, if i were the op id see about sorting out cooling and trying to overclock the q6600 a bit more. Plenty of life in that cpu yet.:)

drill some holes in the cabinet lol
I wouldent up grade unless its to an i5 or 7 chip realy as you wouln't gain much,
save your money and wait till the new year , I am :D

I have done as much as i can in regards of getting more air flow in to the cabinet. She who must be obeyed would go radio rental if I drilled holes in it, she still goes on about how i have ruined it by putting 2 screws on to one of the side panels to mount my router.

I think i'll have to look at alternative cooling, maybe an all in one h2o system.

Fair enough dazza, I understand where you're coming from.
If you like pushing things as far as possible you could always try that with the girlfriend and take a drill to the cabinet. :p

Claim that you must have mice.

Why not auction site your Q6600, seem to average £80.00 to £100.00 2nd hand, once thats gone your Q9550 costs would work out very close to just buying H50 :) Should manage at least 3.6GHz with your mobo, check the board revision though; as I've read that a few older Abit IP35's wont boot/post Q9550's, even with the latest BIOS...

your H50 plan or any other water plan has a flaw...
you still have to get rid of the same heat, in the same space, while it may be more efficaint, you it still want more air flow or it to will warm up the same space its in, it might just take a bit longer. With out more air flow or extra plumbing to take the rad out of the cabinet ( this may be your best bet, but you would probly have to screw it to the out side if you dare lol )

well I think i'll just leave it for the time being it's not struggling with any thing currently. Hopefully in 6 months my little one will move out of the nursery and share with his sister so i can reclaim my study.

Thanks for all the replies and helpful comments though.
