Upgrade - from Ryzen 1700

Hi,

I've been upgrading a bargain Dell desktop I bought back in 2017, but alas it seems like my upgrade options are limited

I'm a developer so need a fair amount of power (more cores > faster cores, RAM at least 16GB and as much fast storage as the budget allows NVME for sure if budgetable). I would prefer a smaller build (so as close to small form factor as possible). I do game (and modern titles like Cyberpunk) but happy with the 1660 at the moment as long as there's an upgrade path with the new system.

My specs are:
32GB DDR4 2400
Ryzen 7 1700
1TB SSD (Not sure on model, but it pretty rubbish compared to the )
256GB NVME (Samsung Evo not sure what model)
GTX 1660 6GB
Case and PSU and MB are Dell, and looking online the MB cannot support anything greater than a 1700X
27" LG 4K monitor, and secondary 32" AOC 2K monitor.

I wouldnt recommend any motherboard without bios flashback feature you will need this feature to update the bios for the cpu to work.

The above motherboard doesnt have this.

Some quick questions

I see that the board you've selected has PCI 4.0 support would I be better getting a faster NVME in that case?
Second quick question on the 5600x vs 5800x (looks like about £150 difference), if I wanted to save some cash now and put that towards a PCI 4.0 NVME would I later me able to upgrade this system with a R9?

In short no. There is little real world usage that would allow you to notice the speed difference between pcie-3 and 4.

Yes you could put a r9 5900x/5950x in it in a couple of years with no issues.

Ah okay, it's mainly when I'm starting up or saving the state of virtual machines, I noticed a massive increase between a standard SSD and NVMEs so far, but if PCIE-4 won't help that's good to know thanks.
