Upgrade... How much will I notice the difference and should I be excited?

My current set up is in my sig below.

I am doing an upgrade to:

i7 920 DO Stepping
UD5 Mobo
6gb Corsair 1600Mhz PC31200C8

As the title suggests just wanted to know if I should expect a noticable difference with my set up?

Judging by what I have read I think 3.8Ghz is a realistic overclock to remain stable on just air?

Woud love to go 4Ghz+ but I assume I would need some heavy duty watercooling for that?

Thanks in addvance!

:)

4ghz is fairly easy to reach on the i7 920's even on air, currently running mine at 4ghz under a TRUE cooler with 2 low speed 400-1200 rpm pwm fans.

+1

4GHz is certainly achievable on air, as well as the TRUE I would suggest looking at the Prolimatech Megahalems or the Corsair H50.

As for performance difference, is your previous rig the one in your sig? Also, what do you usually use your PC for?

Yes my sig is as below :)

I currently use the Prolimatech Megahalem cooler and I love it. At the moment it is keeping my 955BE @3.8 Ghz at about 22 when stable and I have yet to see it get over 55 no matter what I do.

I play a few games and may have to start using programs such as spss (number cruncher??) for my next year and a half at uni!

I assume this will destroy FM10 which is the main game I play... not that the AMD didn't :)

if you've got the money, why not?

give yourself a christmas present ;)

Also I've seen the i7 920 overclocked to 4ghz with air cooling so no problem there

Cheers mate... I don't think I will even need it that high as far as I can see from reviews the 955 I have at 3.8Ghz is equaled by the i7 920 at stock let alone even a slight overclock??

I'll just have to have a play with it when it gets here :)

You certainly wont need it at 4.0ghz for FM10 so your probably right 3.8 will do you fine, although 4.0ghz is easy on air!
