• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

Upgrade time - but I'm a little unsure of what to go for.

Hi, long story short.... current rig is a P4 HTat 3ghz on Springdale with a Radeon 9800Pro. 3dmark05 scores are approximately 2400

Time to move on. Getting a new mobo (Asus a8n premium or a32n deluxe) with either an Opteron 146 or A64 3700+. That should hopefully run nicely at at least 2.5 / 2.6.

Heres the quandry.... I don't know whether to go for the ATI 1800XT or the 7800GT. For the forseeable future I think a single card solution will be fine as I don't game over 1024*768. Obviously if I go for the 7800GT I will be able to add one later - but from reviews it seems the 1800xt is close or better than the 7800GTX - hence it is my preferred option.

There is also the question of whether either is over spec for my requirements. The 6800GS might be fine at my resolution, save about £60-£100 for the time being and allow SLI in the future.

Can anyone advise ?

The 256mb X1800XT is simply the best card available in the price range and will be able to cope easily if/when you get a bigger monitor or up the resolution. SLi doesn't seem worth it in most instances to me.

Thanks. Raises another question though. If SLI isn't really worth it at sub 1600 or higher resolutions (or is hamstrung by slower cpus) is an SLI board worth the extra cash ? Guess I need to head over to the Motherboard section.

I want a premium board that is overclokable, stable and reliable.

Arghh.. questions, questions. :D

Away to ponder some more.
