Hi there,

I current have this computer, but I need to buy a new motherboard and ram to get it working.

Current Specification:
  • AMD Opteron 165 (2*1MB Cache) at 2.5Ghz
  • HIS X1900 XT ICEQ3 (PCI-E - not clocked)
  • Seasonic S12 430W PSU

Budget: £300.00

My Thoughts:

What I am thinking doing is selling it all and upgrading it all. I have the rest, so all I would need is: Motherboard, CPU, RAM, GPU & possibly a new PSU.

I would like to go quad-core, and the graphics card is probably good for what I need, maybe 64-bit too.

What I use the computer for:

I game on the computer at 1280*1024 resolution and would like high settings if possible on most new games (eg. COD4).

I encode/decode videos (AutoGK not video editing) and use Photoshop for my web design. I also use Visual Studios for programming.

I run vista, but currently only 32-bit.

What do you think?

Thanks.

If your budget is £300 then you can't afford to upgrade everything and go quad core. I'd probably go for something like this and re-use the graphics card and PSU. You coudl fit 4gb Ram into the budget if you wanted as well.

That's pretty decent.

Looking to do some overclocking aswell, is it possible on that motherboard? What's the potensial? I'd like to get over 3.0Ghz on air if possible? But i'd be happy with 3.0Ghz

What Semi-pro posted is probably the best thing :) Especially if you want Quad core.

Then you could upgrade your graphics card later on once the newer cards come out next year, and theoretically lower the pricing on the current ones.

You psu is 430w, but being seasonic it should be fairly reliable, might be worth trying to get a new psu in the future just for peace of mind though :)
