Upgrade to 680 SLI specifically for BF3 - worth it?

I did a reinstall of my OS this weekend. Reason?

So many people saying they see average 80-90fps on a single 680 in BF3. All ultra 4xAa.

I can say that on my my rig, with 1 680 on BF3 MP Caspian Border 32player I average around 65-70. No way do I get near an average of 85ish. Lows are down to 50...maybe a glimmer of a 40.

Now that's with my old CPU I grant you. But my GPU is fully maxed at 99%.
And CPU is 70% ish.

For me, 2 x 680 has helped get more out of my rig. I'm waiting for Ivy E end of this year hopefully. Can't be bothered with these mass market chips with igpu etc.

Now I'm not saying anyone is lying, before someone starts. Just saying everyone's rig is different. I'd go two anyway...just because I can :-)

Bioshock was huge fps on a 560ti bud so will be higher galore on a 680. The other 2 I never played so can't comment. Deffo Bf3 'is' the benchmark now. I did show my lowest fps as 52 and this is good enough for my 20/20 vision.

Well as long as the GTX 680 gives more more than say 70FPS in Borderlands then i'll be happy, because i dont play BF3 or COD....... I play Borderlands/ SERIOUS SAM/ DOOM/ FAR CRY, Vegas 2.... i'm an old school shooter, i cant stand COD or any game that's similar.

so for me i might never play a graphics intensive game ... maybe only Bioshock infinity or Doom 4, maybe the GTX 690 is too much for me, i dont play RPGs either, finally, i definitely wont be buying any more than 5 games this year

borderlands 2
far cry 3
sniper elite 2
that other sniper game ?
Bioshock infinity

uuum it looks like the GTX 690 is a waste of time, even so it's still hard to resist

Mal, you have no need for a 'new' gfx card bud. Those games will play effortlessly with a 560ti/7850/570.

If you don't play the newer games why worry about a new GPU that costs fortunes?

my comment would be; If you are buying a single card, get a 680 2GB (this will max out BF3 and only occaisionally dip below 60fps and thanks to adaptive vsync you probably won't notice)

IF you are thinking of SLI and not changing cards for 3 years, get 4GB ones as they will be more "futureproof" if there is such a thing with graphics cards

personally I'm getting a single 2GB card now and waiting for GTX685 4GB cards to go with a 3 screen solution, or stay single screen and wait for 7xx

my recent experience is that resale value on cards doesn't drop much so if you can get a decent price on your old cards you are better off upgrading quickly rather than waiting 3 years as you lose less money and the upgrade costs you less overall

well i may as well get something decent because i've built this rig, but i do have to say that a dual GPU card is a waste of time.

i always play off line and i usually play the same game for months on end, or two games at the same time, i've been playing Borderlands nearly every night for the last year, i very rarely deviate, i get my games off Steam and i buy 3 at a time, maybe twice a year.

i game a hell of a lot, but not many games, i only have about 10 on my hard drive, i delete all the rest and none of these are graphics intensive.... Crysis? i deleted that, Krap shooter, one of the worst i've ever played :D

i'm very fussy, i reject loads of games, it now looks like after loads of research that i'll go for either a 7970 or a 680 after market card and leave it at that

It's here somewhere, we were talking about it last week, someone uploaded a chart of the latest/future cards..... the most powerful single card this year is the current 680, then in nov/ dec the 700 range, on that list there is no GTX 685

IT'S ON PAGE 3 OF THE GTX 690 THREAD

Don't believe everything you read bud. Whilst everything is 'rumours' we will have no evidence of what is and what is not coming out.

I would wait and see TBH.

to be honest, the GTX 685 isn't for me, i'll make a decision after the GTX 690 comes out..... my guess is i'll get the 7970 Lightning or the Saphire etc.

why?

1..... it's cheap and therefore a no brainer
2.....i dont need anything more powerful

but it all depends on the GTX 690, for sure.

I have to agree with you, after all the rumours and shenanigans with the gtx680 before that came out I'll take all rumours with a large grain of salt...

No one knew anything about the facts of the gtx680 intill a week before release.

You've already said the gtx690 is a waste of time.

Why waste even more time waiting for it, just buy the 7970 Lightning or whichever you prefer.

If I were you though and were playing the games you're playing then I would save my money and get a gtx 570 for £200, and spend the rest on a gift for my girlfriend or something.

yea but i might end up buying a game that's high end over the next few years, so it's best to be careful.... no the reason i'm waiting is if prices drop further, plus the 690 might not be a waste of time, because i might change my mind tomorrow....especially if i sell my paintings ;)

this is all a bit scary, if you're saying 50 to 60fps this seems quite low.

my old 8800 gtx is running 30 to 45 FPS and this i really notice, it's way too slow for me, 50 to 60FPS for a GTX 680 aint much faster is it... especially on 1080p

my old card only looks good over 80 fps, but below this it looks choppy, after all this is why i'm upgrading! the image just doesn't pan smoothly from left to right below about 60FPS, there is no way that i'm buying a card that's as low as this.... i keep reading this on all the threads and it gets to me...

i'm after 80 fps period ! for Crysis 2 on 1080p i wont settle for less.... so what is the right card please, because the 680 doesn't look man enough from what you're saying above, i've had 4 years of 60FPS or less.... no more

For Ultra @ 120fps you need 3 cards.

Sure two cards give you GOOD frame rates in Ultra@1080p but if you are a serious BF3 player, you will want 120fps minimum frame rate.
