ive finally got my upgrade bits, (754 sempron + biostar tforce) and im upgrading from a 478 celeron. i was prepared to reinstall windows so backup up anyhting i might want, problem is - my windows disc is badly scratched and wont boot

so i have a borked windows disc, and a fully licenced home edition on the hd currently (which has a fit when i try to boot with the sempron)

sorry if this is a noob like question but i really would like some help if anyone knows anyway of sorting this short of buying a new windows cd

thanks in advanced

could try this..

http://www.roadkil.net/downloads/unstopcp.zip

use that to copy the disc to C:\xpcd

enable the log mode (might take a while to try copying the whole disc, but leave it do its stuff)

then when it says which files are missing (unable to copy) you could ask here or google for them

then use nlite www.nliteos.com to make the C:\xpcd dir into a bootable iso image, burn this with imgburn to a disc and it'll be bootable ;)

this saved my old win98se disc (when i never thought i'd need it again i did!)

btw..

to use nlite you need to have .Net 2.0 installed..

By the looks of it you'll probably need to buy a new license as well. As you've upgraded the Mobo your OEM license is now redundant.

That is unless you have the retail edition.

Ahh, well at least someone has the foresight to buy a retail edition. :)

It shouldn't be hard to get another disc, the expensive part is the license not the media. Look around for media kits, there's gotta be somewhere to sell one cheap.
