Upgrading from a HD4890 - £150 to spend

@ Skyrocket , mate u shouldn't base things just from review sites.. i never believe review sites. results from users are far better.

if u owned the hardware then yes please say.

Gareth - did u flash ur 6950?

Easyrider - I definitely know you have - did your temps go up after the flash?

I might not have quite as big of a case etc but I never get 56c under load ???

I get like mid 70s with fan at like 45-50% and 90s if on automatic (around 38%)

I think I may cancel my order. Firstly because I can't believe it is still in picking, when up to an hour ago they were still selling it with delivery for Tuesday. So I presume this means my order isn't even going to be delivered by Tuesday. And secondly because I'm not 100% sure I need a gfx card upgrade. I haven't encountered any overheating problems, the noise isn't something that bothers me and I haven't struggled with frame rates in games at the highest settings. I just felt the GFX card was my weakest link in the system.

I think the money may be better spent on a new monitor. I'm currently running a 4:3 Dell 1901FP with a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. Whilst the picture quality of the Dell is pretty good considering the age, I could really do with the added productivity of a 16:9/16:10 screen.

I will probably start another thread in the related area, but does anyone have any advice on what monitors are available for below the £150 mark. I think due to space I will be limited to a 22". Although if the monitor uses a VESA mount I can use my current stand that allows the monitor to pretty much sit on the desk which would allow me to go bigger. I'll upload a picture to show my limitations so you have a better understanding.

One last thing, would running the 4890 in 1080p mode give me significantly less performance than what I am currently used to with 1280x1024??

I went from a 4:3 crt to 1080 recently and found the 4890 worked a little harder but with few graphically demanding games about at the moment I haven't noticed much difference, except the extra space. I'm hoping to get away with it for a while (28nm)

Having a think, my pc does seem to struggle a bit with Arma 2 with decent details applied. This was what led me to buying my current setup. Perhaps I should put more effort into overclocking my current setup, it's pretty much stock at the moment...

My advice would be to wait for the next generation of graphic cards, surely there is still some life in the 4890 yet? Also, going from a 4890 to a 6850 doesn't seem like a huge upgrade to me. Just my opinion of course.

Well Arma 2 maxed out will cause grief to most systems. Is it worth the extra outlay for the higher graphics options? thats the question we've all been asking for years. Overclocking the cpu will definately help I seem to remember it being cpu bound but I do not own it so...

Yeah,

Many are having very nice temps with the 6950's :D

I guess we know what we are doing. Oh and actually own the hardware in question .;)

Sorry to be a moaner, But my Sapphire 6950 runs extremely hot compared to my sapphire 4870. At idle with 25 fan the temp is 44 and at load it can hit 80- 85,

Me old 4870 used to idle at 42ish and hit 59 -/+ 3 with 31 % percent fan,

Thats the temps after i flashed to a 6970 std clocks ..
Before it was around high 30's and load was in the 70's.

I recently upgraded from a 4890 to a 6950 (which I have bios modded).

I have found the 6950 quieter. I sold the 4890 for £65 picked up on MM and paid £220 for a HIS 6950.

This fits your budgets quite well :). Buy a 6950, there really are amazing.
