Hi... I have been out of the PC gaming/build world for quite a while and I’m pretty out of touch with the current gen... but have decided my rig is no longer up to scratch and its time to upgrade. Current system is:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE
Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P motherboard
4x 2GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 RAM
EVGA 650 GQ PSU

... as a starter I recently purchased a PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB Red Dragon V2 graphics card (to replace an EVGA GeForce GTX 750 ti 2GB FTW), but it’s obvious that just upgrading the GC isn’t going to be enough :( ... My monitor is an ASUS Strix XG35VQ (I know! ... but I work from home and mainly got it for the size to assist with multiple windows).

Only looking at casual gaming (RPGs, Driving, FPS, etc) and not fuzzed about Ultra settings, overclocking, etc... and I won’t be streaming.

I have been looking at an AMD Ryzen 1600X or 1700... both are the same price on OC at the moment. But which is the better option? ... 1700 has 8 Cores, 16 Threads @3.0GHz and 1600X has 6 Cores, 12 Threads @3.6GHz ... so less cores, but it runs faster!

Looking at benchmarks, reviews etc... they are very closely matched, which with them being the same price, makes it all the harder to decide!?! ... so I look to your experience, expert opinions and guidance.

I am also obviously going to need a new MB & RAM, so would also appreciate suggestions on them please too ... I think my PSU is ok... budget wise I was thinking around £300 total;... but if there is an upgrade recommendation sub this, then great :)

Many thanks :)

scraping the budget - get £40 steam voucher with the board and free 240gb ssd

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £369.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

push up the cash

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £420.07 (includes shipping: £11.10)
1700x can be overclocked to 4ghz all cores, 2600 with a good cooler can handle 4.2ghz all cores .
games like BF1/V you'll notice a difference with extra threads, most of the time ryzen 6 core matches the 8 core for gaming .

ideally you'd want to push 16GB but if you can then wouldnt stress to much

intel version (intel cpus have shot up in price! this use to be £150 odd)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £365.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Thanks; I did see that bundle and was considering it... probably a stupid question; but is the Ryzen 5 2600 a better bet than the Ryzen 5 1600X or Ryzen 7 1700 ???

... also would you consider the X370-Gaming 3 a good MB? ... would an X470 not be better suited for a 2600?

Thanks

Made on 12nm node but still on a 14nm waffer so reason why it can offer better multi and single core speeds.
Naturally through progression x470/b450 boards would be better then the their x370/b350 counter parts they replace, at a cost of course, and such with x450 next year etc .
Board will handle it, but if your looking to drop flagship Zen2+ chip in 2+ years time my not be the best etc

Cool.... so taking all that onboard, I’m now thinking on stretching the budget and going for a B450 board with 16GB RAM...

How does this look :-

- RYZEN 5 Six Core 2600 3.90ghz (AM4) - 188.99 (b-grade 139.99)
- ASUS ROG Strix B450-F - 119.99
- Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB PC4-24000C15 3000MHz - 169.99

TOTAL = 478.97 @ OverClockers

Are there better options provding better value/more bang for my buck?

Thanks
