Hi

I have just tried updating from Vista Home Premium to Win7 Ultimate and it went through the whole installation and stated that it was not successul and restored Vista.

I have run the Windows Compatibilty Advisior and it has stated that I can run Win7 without any problems and therefore I can not understand why this hasn't worked.

When I first started the installation it did ask me if I would like to transfer my files and folders or complete a fresh update. Would this have anything to do with it?

I don't want to try and install it again, for it to not work.

Thanks for any help! :)

What was your answer?

You should be able to upgrade from Vista HP to 7 Ultimate in place providing they are both 64bit or both 32bit.

Yeah, I selected to 'upgrade' and kept my documents. I'll try a clean upgrade but I need some advise on the best way to do this...

I'll transfer everything to my external hard drive then and see if this works.
I've already used Windows Backup and Restore Center to back everything up to my external hard drive. Will this be enough and will I be able to just restore from there or will this not work?

I need to keep all my documents (music & pictures etc) and ideally all my favourites...

You can use Windows Easy Transfer to help move user info from old OS to new OS. I think it was called that on Vista too...

Look under START->Accessories->System Tools or it should be on the "Welcome to Windows" screen.

backup all you need to your external hard drive and then set your bios to boot from DVD first then HDD. Boot from the 7 dvd and follow the instructions

It was an upgrade version that I had.

I've sorted it now and I'm running Win7 Ultimate but it's just a bit of a blag getting everything back how I wanted it.

I'm impressed with Win7 so far though...
