Upgrading RAM

Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum and not much of a pc gamer, unfortunately I'm more a console gamer (I know, I know).
We bought our lad this spec last xmas and I was wondering how I go about upgrading the Ram from 8GB to something a bit bigger, maybe 16GB upwards? Do I need to buy the same make as the current one or can I just buy any? Are they all the same size, fixture wise?

You can buy the same make and add to it as long as you have space for it - Best Bet as it keeps things simple.
What sort of RAM is it - DDR3 or DDR4 ?

8bg ram is good enough for standered gaming.

What type of games does he play? specific titles. and what other things does he do on the PC
