following on from the Apple TV thread

i've been looking at what i can use the upnp steam from my synology NAS device for

I've been looking at the Snazio Net DVD

how exactly does the UPnP thing work. are you just able to browse the contents of the folder on my NAS, or do you have to go directly to what file you've shared ?

does it just function like a normal player when viewing stuff over UPnP ?

How it works seems to depend on the software thats streaming the video rather than the player. I have run Dlink Mediahome, Nero, Twonky and 2 others that I dont remember the names of. With some of the above you see your directory structure on you uPnP device on others you just get great big long lists.

I am just contemplating a CD-406e, ReadyNas NV+ or one of the Thermaltake NAS units (if I could find one) rather than the RAID5 card in a PC solution I have now. However at present I have no experience with the abilities of any of them. You are also limited in what software you can run if you are running it directly on the NAS, Twonky seems to work for most and they all have their own programs too.

BTW I have a Dlink 320 and I highly recommend you dont bother with it. Works fine for many AVIs but it just does not have the power to decode some smoothly, at least thats what I find.
