After a bios update, his card still doesn't run. I can't try it in any of my systems, as I don't have the relevant power connections

Try the card in your PC. It will rule out whether the card is dead or not.
EDIT, Just read your last post. Use his PSU. Just sit it beside yours and use it to power just board, P4 and the GFX. The rest if needed can run off your PSU,

But I'm pretty sure it's not dead. It comes up in bios as "standard vga graphics adapter"
