US Car buying fun

Love it Rich, Glad you did all the little tests you should be sorted. Remember check the oil on it every 1000 odd miles to you find that engines consumption the northstars are all different. My STS was 300hp from the same engine lovely noise it makes when you floor it I miss it all the time. How awesome are the seats massage function every 15 minutes :D

Yours have the top end Bose system? The sub is simply bone shattering its the best sound system I ever hear from stock.

Sorry but that is complete and utter BS. I recall speaking to a guy who worked there. They are on $15 per hr MAX. Its about one of the most low end un-educated jobs you can get out here.

Well, its not, my Brother in Law works in their regional head office in operations.

As does his mother.

They told me about the stupid wages the drivers are on, a couple of years ago.

Sorry but your both talking complete BS

http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/UPS-Delivery-Driver-Salaries-E3012_D_KO4,19.htm

Average wage : $68,323.

Now stick that in your pipes and smoke it.

lowest wage $58,000 highest driving wage $78,000.

Thats CASH wages, their pay, that doesnt include the medical benefits and pention contributions and overtime.

Thats BASIC PAY.

PS the lower wage range there also includes the thousands of part time drivers they have as well.

You are talking about a company who pays a guy $2.5 MILLION in compo + $50,000 PA disability when he falls 6ft off a loading bay and hurts his back.

Why are they paid so much, atpbx? I don't really understand? Thats a pilots wages is it not?

The same reason that autoworkers assembling cars are on $60k + benefits, garbage men are on good wages, police officers earning 100k in some states, etc.

Ok and that reason is what?

I'm genuinelly asking - I am staggered a UPS guy can earn almost $100,000 a year.

I don't know about the UPS delivery people, but for governmental and auto industry jobs its due to the unions, for instance being an assembly line worker building a car was (probably still is) seen as a way to lift someone out of being working class and towards middle class by paying them a middle class salary ... at least this was so in the eyes of the unions.

Now how that works I shall never understand, and surely assembly line work building cars is as working class as you can get ...

Part 2!

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is finally on its last legs, at 190k miles the transmission is starting to slip, it's leaking oil and coolant and half the electrics don't work :p

This time we had the advantage of having cash available with a $10k limit - the wife likes her SUVs so our first thought was to get a newer model Grand Cherokee as it had served us pretty well and she liked them - however in 2005 they did a re-model and it kinda sucks tbh :p The Laredo now feels really cheap and plasticky and not really up to scratch -unfortunately that then opened up the scope massively.

So after racking up a thousand miles or so of driving around SB County and L.A. (*spit*), including looking at an 8.1L Yukon XL (too big, shocking mpg), Honda Pilot (very good apart from rear seats don't fold flat and wasn't high enough), Ford Explorer/Expedition (seats not comfortable), Chevy Trailblazer (too small), and being tempted by a jet black 1992 raised Ford Bronco that she wanted to put pink hibiscus flowers on.....we settled on:

2001 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 5.3L, 92k miles - $9,450 including a Garmin Nuvi GPS thrown in. Oh a 20" chrome rims :p

Got really lucky - absolute mint condition, not a dent or scratch, 2 prev owners, guy was selling it as he had just got a company car, good maintenance records, new tires, alignment and brakes 6 months ago etc. All electrics work and the interior only really has wear on the drivers chair, the passenger and rear seats look like they've barely been used. And on the wife's side most importantly she likes the colour ;)

Mileage is er..ok (15-17 avg probably) but it's a cracking SUV, leather heated seats, Bose sound, sunroof, tons of cupholders lol :)

Only disappointing thing is that it's a 5.3L not a 5.4L which would give wife and I 10L between us, 9.9 will have to do though :D
